    The 8th of March celebration

International women day is comming, the 8th of March. Always wanted to ask is this day been celebrated in other countries, or it is important only in Russia?

PS If it doesn't don't forget to congratulate your girl friend!

It's a Russian thing as far as I can tell -- never even heard of the holiday until I came to this country.

As I understand it, it's only celebrated in Russia, even though it's called "International" Women's Day.

DaveUKagain's right - "forget it at your peril, fellas" - it does seem to be a huge issue here with women - the secretary's office in our building looked like a florist's kiosk when I left yesterday! One colleague complained to me that our boss had given us "only tulips"... I was surprised, but then I'm just a foreigner and I'm not complaining at being given flowers, regardless of the type!

I assume that post soviet countries (not meaning NIS) have it too. But think it's not a great event there any more.

    Ops.

I had an idea that most of the expats don't take it seriously. Unfortunately (and I think most of women here will aggree) it really matters for russian women as we feel about this holiday almost like about St. Valentine's or something like that. As for me I was very upset when my expat boyfriend didn't congratulate me.

We are women, what else to expect from us!

    Anastasia,

Fair warning indeed! I have congratulated every woman I have seen today, starting at the little bazaar where I bought a lightbulb to the small market where I buy incidentals, and every Russian woman reacted happily and with a big smile. One woman at a market who had previously never uttered anything but "Govorite!" and "45 roubles", smiled broadly and started talking to me like a normal person! So, guys, treat them right on this holiday and get a rewarding smile instead of that scowl you've been getting. :-)

    Daz your daughters' influence, Bookie
Not that they care 'bout the holiday, but on the whole women, especially daughters make man milder and much more attentive to this kind of things

    Sadie,

Sigh...My father was a Marine Drill Instructor and I spent many years turning boys into men in the Army, but God played a cosmic joke on me and gave me daughters instead of sons. All that good training thrown right out the window!

    Daughters

    Sadie,

Yes, but whereas sons have the good sense to fear Thunder on Two Feet when the father walks into the room, daughters just look at you with a look that says, "Yes, and what do YOU want?" You can grab boys by the stacking swivel and put the fear of God into them when they get out of line, but daughters are impervious to every form of discipline that works with boys.

At least they can`t field strip an M-16 in front of you when you start trying to discipline `em, Kniga. ;-)))))))

Ladies, congratulations for Den Zhenshina - I wish you all life, love, happiness and success. If I don`t, you`d kill me.

    Dave,

I've survived one war and two daughters -- both activities took about the same number of years off my life...

Why can't you let them have their silly ex-Communist holidays and humour them? When in Rome etc.....
