May be the process was just different from the process in the US?

From an outsiders point of view it looks like that marriage in the US is a 5 minutes deal, and all is settle and done, in Russia (and many other country's) marriage is a serious thing, it is not a 5 minutes deal.

But I agree with you, the process can be exhausting, especially if one had not done his homework, and I had not done so, so I "won" two extra trips back home to fix one piece of paper, but it was not due to "Russian bureaucracy on steroids", it was just because the authority back home gave me a wrong information at the beginning (they did not have the formula that I needed), when I found out the right name of the formula by accident the authority was able to make it in one minute.

You take for granted that all country's embassy offer the same level of service to there country men, I can inform you that they do not, persons from some country's have to go home to fix this kind of paper issue.
