How is it any different to some countries banning Skype or YouTube?

Regarding Wikipedia, censorship of Wikipedia has occurred in several countries, including China, France, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Thailand, Tunisia, the United Kingdom and Uzbekistan

We cannot use Wikipedia as any form of reference in College/University papers for the simple fact that it is open and the content of the topic(s) being looked at or researched, can be easily altered on the fly (as this has already been proven in government and city scandals). If you want to find out information, there any many other more reputable sources than Wikipedia...banning it isn't really a huge loss to anyone.

Wikipedia is source based, how you use it and determine a page's value has as much to do with it's citations as any book. Banning information in some sort of moralistic crusade is a dangerous route to go down for any society.

on my Mac it is still there!

https://www.wikipedia.org/

but than i click on the site -russian- (language) https://ru.wikipedia.org/ and it says, the funny Mac face and -connection refused- so something IS going on there.
and this is the message it get when digging further:
Google Chrome's connection attempt to ru.wikipedia.org was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured.
Check your Internet connection
Check any cables and reboot any routers, modems, or other network devices you may be using.
Allow Chrome to access the network in your firewall or antivirus settings.
If it is already listed as a program allowed to access the network, try removing it from the list and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server...
Check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server: Go to Applications > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies and deselect any proxies that have been selected.

Also read about the ban, but so far I can open the Russian site. Maybe, just give it some time?....

If one believes WIKI writes the truth and the truth only, poor world. everyone with half a gram of computer skills can add, edit, write anything one wants to write. facts or fiction, maybe the entries are being checked, but when, by whom, and who does the editing, if any.
said that, it does not mean it is not an useful thing to have from time to time..

As someone wrote on another forum I hang out on:

I doubt very much that any Russian, except possibly the most inept, will lack alternative sources of information relating to those drugs due to this censorship. However, this is an example of censorship and should be noted and tutted at, in the strongest possible way.

God forfend that such a thing would be allowed within our hallowed lands (I obviously extend the definition of "our" to include the US, Canada, Aus, NZ, SA, some of the more reputable bits of the EU and possibly Wales)

Ah, a new word! "increduality" What does it mean? Dual levels of incredulousness?

http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/ - here you can check anonymous corrections in wiki-puki (which was founded for porno-money, such funny thing :))

http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/wikiwatch/ - the most "fried" edits/censorships based on readers votes

... and, finally, everyone can relax: http://top.rbc.ru/technology_and_media/25/08/2015/55dc193d9a794748bf3eb026

Wiki undercover agents have already sabotaged the first 2 links - "This Webpage is not available"

Relax? How to relax if you owe $38,000 on a car and there are truck-sized potholes waiting to break the axles...I prefer to buy a "beater" = "Trashmobile" or "Scrap Metal on Wheels" or "Rolling Junk" ...:)
