I don't know, what's going on in those democratic European "nowhere and everywhere....", so it should be the rhetoric question? ;)

Indeed, Carl, that about sums it up, thanks for a clever read. The plans have come a cropper.:big-grin:

It is more like "eat boiled grass" stage.

"Boiled grass" is a figurative expression, no need to take it literally. Black Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday wasn't a prediction...

"That analysis of Putin, rather than one of him as a master spy, fits more closely with what he has done as Kremlin boss. Putin today displays an open contempt for Russian public opinions and an uncaring disregard for the economy-damaging sanctions and international disapproval that his Ukraine adventure has provoked, traits that befit a drunken gambler."

"Drunken gambler?" "Contempt for Russian public opinion (he has 85% approval rating). "...uncaring disregard..." (oh, yeah, sure LOL) "...for the economy-damaging sanctions..." (sanctions are not damaging the economy, low price of oil is, and US economy is in decline if you remove Obama's jiggering of the GDP index.) What do you expect with a typical Russia-bashing, biased article from the loony Left-wing Washington Compost written by Jim Hoagland? Nothing but horse-puckey.

Fanty, in Russian it is called ex-perds (икспёрды) - x-farts or fart-outs. Pardon...

Contempt for Russian public opinion

That's probably the only factual mistake in this article. However, we need to bear three things in mind: 1) this "public opinion" has been shaped carefully with the central TV stations, actually for years in a row 2) the unspoken consensus seems to have been that the well-being of the masses would not be affected (it has significantly deteriorated and will deteriorate even more, big time) 3) in repressive societies people respond to the polls "like they are expected to".
You will be surprised how these proverbial 85% will soon become 80%, then 70%, then 50%. Just wait for a while, I think you will not have to wait for a long time.

sanctions are not damaging the economy, low price of oil is

Both, I would say. And a handful of other factors. However, basing your economy almost exclusively on oil and gas revenues was very unwise to begin with...
