Well Thursday flight is coming around a bit quickly and although I've packed I'm not sure the clothes I've got will be sufficient - especially the shoes...what are the best boots for the winter?

You will need something with a thick sole and a nice thick lining of some sort. It might be easiest to buy some boots when you arrive - there are lots of shoe shops here, and boots are reasonably priced.

i use this type of boots since many years (the photo of a -caterpillar- is for reference only.) warm, fur lined very comfortable.
only when walking the dog very early, and it was snowing durung the night and no ways yet cleaned, than something higher up the calves.https://www.google.ru/search?q=russian+valenki&newwindow=1&espv=210&es_sm=91&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=LddmUtrOO6a44ASl8ICwCA&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=798&bih=466#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=kbjorHyFyIbMFM%3A%3BfJbZXsDXJeFB_M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fcdn.shopify.com%252Fs%252Ffiles%252F1%252F0180%252F2979%252Fproducts%252FKatja-Natural_large.jpg%253F44%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.zdarboot.com%252Fcollections%252Fproducts%252Fkatja%3B480%3B480
again, it is a reference photo only, these boots are only good in high snow or when it is very cold. not very chic or fashionable some might say, but i rather have these than cold feet.

but basically for about 100 $/3000 rubles you get good footwear here. cold season is coming and sales are on everywhere.
and don;t forget. moscow's finest (the cities road cleaning dept...) is putting out tons of salt and reagent onto the streets every year. shoes/boots don;t like both very much. so after every -outing- wash them with clear water, let them dry, and use a good, FAT shoe cream. not that silly little lanolin covered plastic things). Salamander or Salton makes good stuff, shoe wax.

Even caterpillars are fine, I wear them during the winter.

Unless you plan heading out into the countryside for several hours or days hunting or fishing or whatever, I wouldn't worry too much about foot wear, especially around the city.

The say that this winter will be cold indeed, but in the past just shoes made in Italia (demi season) were enough for me, not for walking for hours though.

I would recommend to buy smth when you are here depending upon the real situation with weather.

Who knows, may be again during the next winter It will be just -5C - +1C
