How old are you, Tolik?

Jack17

Tolka, you don't have to answer that; Potty's always obsessed with mens' ages. I suspect that's why she started this thread.

However, I'd be grateful if you'd answer my question:

I'm looking to buy a small gun (9mm or 45) for my man purse. What brand and cal of gun would you recommend?

For my 2˘ I'd say hire one of *Tolka* friends to carry for you ;)

For personal protection that you'll probably never need, why do you want to carry around a cannon ?

Unless you are athletic|coordinated and have rather ..ahem.. pertinent experience, you're not going to hit anything with a pistol, anyway.

I'd go more with a .22 but not a .32 -or- a taser or mace

Jack17, I am worried about you!

You robustly defend the US of A, and then you admit that you carry a purse!

As for guns, you do not need one, there are far too many guns in the US of A already! ;)

LOL! :D There is enough 'White Noise' on this site to drive anybody to reveal all!

Oooops, I guess the term 'White' Noise is no longer Politically Correct! ;)

It reminds me of an escapade years back - I was travelling in a vehicle with 2 junior and fairly inexperienced colleagues. I told them that we would soon be passing through a hostile area where we might run into Illegal Vehicle Check Points manned by armed men. So, as we needed a cover story to secure safe passage through any Check Point we could not shoot our way through or out of - first drill was to talk our way through and then, if necessary, fight our way out.

So, I gave them 20 minutes to come up with what they would say if we were stopped. After 20 minutes and as we were about 40 Kms from approaching the hostile area, I turned to one of my prodigies and asked the question, 'What will you say if we come across an Illegal Check Point?'

The response was, "We work for a Medical Charity, we know nothing, but HE works for Military Intelligence!"

I could not stop laughing for the rest of the journey! :D

I had taught them well! :)

The old ones are always the best, back onto subject of Tolko on the hot seat.....

are you married, divorced or single.

All three - it really depends on the time of the Year, where I am and what I am doing! ;)

Was married, but my nomadic life took its toll - I went away for very long periods of time (many. many months), to distant & not so healthy lands, was not able to contact home (for various operational reasons) - so, as you can imagine, the former wife could not stand it any longer, so the rest is history..................!

Tolkoraz, thanks for taking up the hot seat. Thank you, Potty, for putting him there.

Without asking you to reveal too much about your job - it seems like your work is happening in areas and situations where/when diplomacy is failing or has failed.

So, what is diplomacy doing wrong in general?

TolkoRaz
13-10-2013, 22:43
Good question, but I am not really sure as there is no generic reason - I guess Diplomacy fails for a number of reasons, any of which could be or include the following:

Lack of Patience
Suspicion / paranoia / Distrust - not even willing to meet face to face ('Shuttle Diplomacy' as they call it!)
Inability to forgive and to move forward
Lack of Good Will on either side(s)
Unrealistic demands set by either side
One or both sides has no wish to find a solution for a myriad oif different reasons
Absence of Amnesty for Key Player / Mediatior (War Crime / Genocide)
Some actors simply prefer War / Conflict / Terrorism

I also guess that list is not exhaustive, I am sure that there could be more reasons..........

I have many drinks which I enjoy, especially during the differing Seasons, but as you specifically asked me to name a favourite, it would have to be a very LARGE Gin & Tonic (Bombay Sapphire & Schweppes SlimLine Tonic) with Ice, Lemon, a slither of Lime Skin and a generous slice of Cucumber :)

Camel Spiders which live in the Desert and which eat parts off your face whilst asleep!

They anaesthetise the area they choose to eat, and then chomp away! I have seen men awake in the morning with sizeable bits of their nose and cheeks missing!

TR is on the hot seat? This folder has been dead for years, what magician has brought it back to life? And what was the price for Tolko Raz to resurrect this zombie zone?

I have just one question for TR:

What is is that you do for a living? (Without giving away the farm....)

I work, and have always worked, in the Intelligence & Security sphere in one capacity or another, normally at the sharp end.

Now I specialise more in Counter-Terrorism and other serious threats to physical assets and to personnel. But in the past whilst serving my Government, I have worked from Embassies, served in plenty of Conflicts both in and out of uniform and undertook many other operations which have featured in a few books, but thankfully most have not! :D

Nope, I am not naming any of them, but in some of those books there are a few photos with the black line across my eyes etc. We were issued with the Black Line when we commenced training - I can't tell you how difficult it is to see and to shoot straight with that blackness infront of one's eyes! ;)

I trust that answers your query, but I can't really write any more than that!

ezik
21-10-2013, 17:08
OK...

So, mention some books, please. That should be public info, right?

Assuming that you have come across a fair share of crazy warlords, fanatics and psychos - what was the maddest person you ever met or had to deal with?

What was the worst meal you ever had? And the best?

Which fiction movie and/or book about intelligence services, secret ops etc, in your opinion, is at all somewhat realistic?

TolkoRaz
21-10-2013, 18:51

I would rather not mention the books in question because as I previously mentioned photos of hairy men are in them, including me. And, the books would confirm exactly which organisations I have worked for - I am sure you understand that

Assuming that you have come across a fair share of crazy warlords, fanatics and psychos - what was the maddest person you ever met or had to deal with?

The maddest and most unpredictable people I have had to deal with were embattled Warlords from the Balkans and drugged up militants in the Niger Delta who were holding Russian and Westerners as hostages

What was the worst meal you ever had? And the best?

Worst meal I have ever eaten, or been expected to eat was in the Russian Officers Mess in Slatina, Kosovo! After many Grammes of Vodka and Zakuski, they delivered me a bowl of Fish Soup - I looked into the bowl and met eye to eye with a shoal of Fish Heads!

Best Meal: Come on Yozhik, you know the Dacha Life - its has to be one of my own BBQs! :) I could beat Benedikt hands down when it comes to BBQs! ;)

Which fiction movie and/or book about intelligence services, secret ops etc, in your opinion, is at all somewhat realistic?

Most books written by Gerald Seymour are very well researched and normally ahead of the game - Condition Black and The Journeyman Tailor are 2 which are well worth reading.

Other books which have a Russian connection would include:

A Spy's Life and Brandenburg (Henry Porter)
Icon (Frederick Forsyth)
Last Rights (Tim Sebastien)

I refuse to buy any books written by former colleagues, even 'Factional' ones! It is one thing using skills learnt on the job to make money after service life ends, but to make money by 'selling' secrets or referring to methodology in books is a 'no go' area for me - it compromises those still at work and the way they operate, along with the people they operate with and meet etc.

Physical assets (High Profile buildings or those which contain High Profile people or are hosting High Profile events, High value equipment or technology, Critical Infrastructure etc)

The only dealings I have had with animals is when extracting a married couple from Tashkent, Uzbekistan - we were all set to go, I had everything in order until his wife said she was not leaving without the cat!

Her husband and I explained that we did not have the paperwork to fly a cat out of the country, but despite the very serious nature of the extraction, she was adamant that if the cat did not go, she would not go!

Three simple questions, Tolko, dude:

Three simple questions, Tolko, dude:

Please do not call me 'dude' - its sooooooooooo American! :p

I am a driven man, dynamic, a workaholic, and fortunately am very satisfied and happy with my 'job'. I tend to mix with similar people from the same background, but those 'normal' people whom I eventually allow to get to know me and learn a little bit about me, my past and current choice of employment, think its exciting and very unconventional blah blah blah!

But for me, its all I have done and I do not think of my work any differently to any other employment. It gives me great satisfaction, self purpose - there is no greater reward in my book than helping others, occasionally saving life and continuing the fight against those who wish to do harm to the innocent.

At this stage of my life, living on a Pacific Island would be far too relaxing for me; I need stimulation, excitement and something to get out of bed for in the morning - No doubt, the hammock might be more appealing in my later years! ;)

 How paranoid are you in your daily life

Too bad you weren't around for fun & games before Perestroika & McDonalds turned the Soviets soft :smokin:

Let me know when you want to walk across der Glienicker Brücke. I'll fix you up with a relaxing 7-11 franchise in Minnesota, courtesy of Witness Protection Program :Loco:

:drink::10518:

I was in the CCCP before McDonalds opened. In fact, I was there to see the first queues all around Pushkin Ploshad and the first queues outside PiazzaHut on Kutuzovsky Prospect - for the young and families, they were exciting times!

As for Glienicke Brücke; I have been across that many times - it was not only used for 'swops' and official exchanges, it was also used by other official Mission(s) - Check the Potsdam Agreement! ;)

Being the adventurous person you are, do you dare to cross the roads in Moscow when the little red man is telling you to wait or do you chance it :D

Okay, one more then :)

Do you feel comfortable having no family or stable life partner? ;)
Are you, like a typcal male (and I don't mean it in a derogatory way!) satisfied with multiple partners or would you rather have one that would be like a "Decembrist's wife"? :D

I could not expect a female to share my crazy life - there is no room in my suitcase / bergen for 2! ;)

TR, are you single?

(Ah I'm married....)

No, seriously, seems you have a very adventurous life, to be married, unless she's just like you too.

And,

I guess generally speaking, what has been the most useful skill (that you can talk about) for your career?

Single; I was married to a fellow colleague - but sadly, it did not work out!

Good question about skills - I think it would have to be Surveillance & Sutuational Awareness. Over the years, I have been taught and learnt to 'read & understand' the situation which has allowed me and others to be proactive rather than being forced to react to a situation which may not have been recoverable from.

Key to survival is seizing and maintaining the initiative - If the initiative has been lost and one is on the back foot, one normally has to fight the way out which can then go one of two ways! ;)

When out with colleagues and former colleagues, even socially, we always try and get to the chair in the bar or restaurant which gives us the best view of the space, but especially the main access points into the space. You will normally find me, in these situations, with my back to the wall! ;)

Again, a very good question - it was an interesting one to ponder - Thank You.

I normally use the Perekhod, but it has been known for me to 'chance it'! :)

LOL! It was also a very good way of 'showing' any surveillance! ;)

'Choke Points' are used to unmask teams or force them to show themselves - darting across a road could do the same, especially on Moscow's main roads! :D

If you were, I hope that you were not based in Corsica and ruined a romantic meal I was having!

Whilst sitting in a peaceful harbour facing restaurant, enjoying a very tasty Corsican dish, we were rudely disturbed by a group of Legionnaires who had been given the evening off - they drove past the line of restaurants throwing Thunder Flashes and WhizzBangs amongst the tables!

According to the locals, it was a regular occurrence and was just the ' boys from up top letting off steam'! :D

Tolko, I have heard the saying in Russia "A man without a scar, is not a man".

I will confess, my "favorite" scar is on my left eyebrow. I jumped (from behind) soon to be Mrs. Bydand to playfully startle her, and was greeted with a bony elbow to the eye! Now I'm at least one meter away if I want to spook her!

What is your favorite/most memorable scar?

TolkoRaz
30-10-2013, 14:27
I do not have any favourite scars! And, I wish the scars were received during less exciting times! ;)

But I am thankful that none are normally visible to the man or woman in the street and that all parts of me, despite the multiple scaring, still work perfectly! :)
