very simple and easy. nothing to type, just to search.
area, district, street and building number and the two meters will tell you from when and how long you will have to do with either a sponge bath, shower with friends or lucky you, you have an alternative little hot water boiler that will tidy you over.

You can probably buy one of those electric machines that heat up the water as it flows (Hotels use them), but make sure the cables in your flat/apartment can cope with the current they use, otherwise you may experience other problems (fires).

you just click on to street and look until your street comes up. i don't know what browser you have, i have google chrome who translates everything into english. so the street names maybe will be different at least a few letters, from the original russian. but i assume you know how to write your street name in russian language or how it is written.
if you don't know which district you are in, get a Moscow map and find out, at least you are one step closer.
or give me your street name and house number, and i can find it for you if you want it....

awful tradition!

Why? What are they doing at this time?

Maintenance and repairs. There's a cold winter ahead, everything must be checked for problems. I think no one will argue that it's better to be without hot water in spring or summer than to have it and heating cut off when it's -20 or -30.

To be fair its a big programme which goes on all summer. A few years ago it was a three week shut off now its down to 10 days. Yes its a pain but the benefit is you get that nice warm apartment when its minus 30 outside in winter.

most countries don't repave the roads after every winter either.

they aren't exactly known for trying to make things work efficiently.

Since they the first time they turned off the hot water in the summer up to this year, the companies who have been contracted to clean the pipes have had a stable job yearly. Those responsible for the budget get a budget to work with every year. That's ignoring the kickbacks, etc. etc.

Why would anyone want to stop the yearly practice of turning hot water off in the summer, they would loose their jobs and yearly guaranteed income.

The fact that it's year 2012 and the practice is still continued is the only reason why attention is brought to it only now. Those who previously accepted the 2 weeks without hot water thought there was no alternative. Now people understand there are alternatives and that the yearly shut off is ultimately unnecessary with today's technology.

The plan is the yearly hot water shut-offs won't be needed in 3-4 years.

Yevdokia Babkova, 73, a pensioner, boils big pots of water, which she carries to the bathtub. She's so grateful for 11 months of hot water that she doesn't complain when it's off in summer.

"We didn't have any hot water at all until 1959," she says. "So now we are lucky to have it at all.

a small Stiebl Eltron ( no plug for them, but they are the best for this kind of situation) size of a shoebox, can be installed under the sink, in a bathroom corner and will give enough water that you can have a normal shower and wash the dishes. Installation though only from a qualified electrician, because it needs a connection to the board, not just a plug and socket. pulls quite a lot of power and you don't want a black out of your place...

Don't focus on when you will not have hot water. Rather, focus on the best way to get a shower. All you need are two large pots in which to boil water and a small bucket in which to mix the heated, and cold water to a comfortable temperature. Use the pot for dipping the water and have a blast. It's just like camping!

because as it happens, we use our heater not only during the summer switch of period. as it happened, we had no hot water before yesterday for 2 hours, it was announced beforehand on the entrance door. nice, just turn a handle and have hot water again for the morning shower.
and as i wrote, that Stiebel Eltron heater is the size of a shoebox and fits even under the sink. it is an electricity heater but since we are not using it permanently, we are ok with it.

looks like i am to long in Russia and assume to often that others also know..

ТЕЦ= тепло електро цех (sp?) russian acronym for the huge power stations that generate electricity and hot water. turbines are powered by hot water/steam and that -left over- is than used for hot water to heat the buildings central heating system and also the hot water that comes out from the taps in your apartment. that is the reason why NO Russian will EVER use hot water from the tap for cooking, making tea or the like. it is considered -technical water- and fit only for washing the dishes.

16-25 June.
seems to be an improvement on the site, just had to write in the street name and after 4 letters he found the rest...(Russian language of course). so i did not even go down to the -alternative variant- where you type district, street and building....
But as i wrote, years ago we bought a little Stiebel Eltron water heater, size of a shoebox, and gives enough, instant hot water for ALL our needs in sufficient quality.
a note of caution though: if you live in an older building, let only QUALIFIED (the electrics of the local housing estate. NO PRIVATE friend, -know all-, -master of all hands-, if something goes wrong, you pay and can be costly indeed) people do the wiring. we had to install an extra line directly into the distribution box out on the corridor. our building was constructed during the 70's and the lines are not strong enough to take on that load of electricity, special when also the washing machine and the oven are on at the same time.
and the little heater comes in handy also during the year, it did happen that a pipe burst they were digging and had to switch off the water....

so the water is even cleaner then there. We have beavers, the four legged variety, and fresh water crayfish living in the river. They don't live in dirty water. also, there are lots of mussels, black shells, while they can take a lot if the water is too dirty, they also die, and they live there quite happily until I found out... now they are dinner once in a while.

We're a bit tight as well as cool :-)

I promise myself every year to do so, but never get around to doing so.

other countries dont seem to do this do they though?

maybe i'm not comparing apples with apples?!

Russia has not.
=ring line= means, you need to switch off one part, what lies behind gets the heat or water still from the other end, pressure might be turned down just as a precaution, but you are not COMPLETELY without... just needs a turn of a few wheels.

Oikey you must have a very understanding wife...I'm perfectly OK with the cold showers I've been using them all my life to keep my insatiable libido in check ;) my wife on the other hand needs her hot showers .......all year round...I would be in deep poo poo if I had not installed a boiler before we moved in!

when will you have no hot water?

the company said the schedule will be published in about 10 days. make sure you check. so you will not be surprised one morning when only ice water comes out from the shower......

My rented flat has its own boiler, but I haven't had to use it yet because for the past couple of years the hot water has been turned off in July/August when I've been out of Moscow. Perhaps this will be the year to try out the boiler! Looking forward to seeing the schedule for 2016 :)

we also have since years a little boiler installed, a Stiebl - Eltron, the size of a shoe box. sucks up electricity quite a lot, but for 1 week or two, not a big deal. it takes minute behind the bathroom panel to turn 2 levers. and we have hot water once more....

Do you keep it on for the whole week, or just switch it on whenever you need hot water?

we leave it on for the whole time. it gives hot water only when you open the faucet. inside the heater there is a thick heating coil and it heats up the water immideately, while the cold water comes in. you close the faucet, it switches off, no wasted energy.DURCHLAUF ERHITZER whatever that might be called in english. meaning, the water is being heated while it is running through the tubes. no boiler, no storage. butt it is powerful, not just plugged into a socket. we have one extra line and circuit breaker right in the distributor box.
something similar like the one in the pics. obvious, since ours is already 10 years old, they don't make the model anymore. but we had not one problem in all the time. though, once a year for 10 days. should last forever,

Tvoi Dom has them, and if you think buying and installing one, let ONLY the ЖКX do it....

don-t think so. during the May holidays many people are not working and it will be hard to get a crew to do it. and definitely get only a reliable company to do it.

just type in the first few letters of your place. must be Russian language. even if Google has translated the page into English. -we- have ONCE MORE, AGAIN no hot water from May 29 to June 7th. Even if the good Mayor had said already 2 years ago, no more cut off hot water for -maintenance- purposes.
