Try Moo Moo (Russian:My My) they have several buffet style restaurants around Moscow. You can't miss them they have a large statue of black and white cow outside. Google them.

Oh, these natives... Not cafe, but the dog & Gerasim animation (http://www.russian-moscow.com/mumu-a-russian-animation/) based on Ivan Turgenev's short story of the same name.

Муму is one of those rare words I've found with a double meaning.

I was using "Почему ты Муму ебешь" for my signature, but it was grossing out the Russians, who read Муму as Little Pioneers. *Hazelnut* told me to change it.

It is best homemade. If anyone wants a very good recipe that my mother makes ( She is Russian). Let me know, as it is very easy to make.

I never tried to make borsch. My hubby usually makes it and it's amazing. But it usually takes him half of a day.

Borshcht I make in crock pot, but we already talked about that.

no, it * IS * easy to make, it just takes a long time, like u said. :)

when i make it, it takes me 1/2 a day, but i make a massive pot, so that it will last for a week, or more, if i freeze it.

Proper borscht cannot be made in a chain establishment. Even if instructions are followed to the letter. Perhaps someone more advanced than I am will explain just how these things work.

Invite yourself to a babushka. The BRSH5.8 gene is widely distributed among Russian females, and gets activated in 90% of them by the age of 60. Making and feeding and force-feeding borscht to others becomes the sole meaning and purpose for syndrome sufferers.

If I wanted to eat out I would go to a babushka-run factory cafeteria. There are out out site and don't manifest themselves in the information space but there still a few left. My favourites are the Moscow Metro cafeteria on Vtoroy Katashevsky (?) by Metro Tretyakovskaya or even more the one on the territory of the Water Pumps Plant at Novaya Alexeyevskaya. I've described some of them here (http://where.cheap-moscow.com/category/food-2/for-gluttons/). And, of course, the Old Believers refractory. That's where you will find common Russian food at its best, and borscht will always be available.

Look for babushkas, either in home environment or in time-warp stolovayas. Borscht and babushkas come together. Otherwise they are mere shadows of themselves.

Disregard advice to go to MuMu/MooMoo, Grabli, Yelki-Palki etc. These places are for tourists and Russian office slaves. Food is usually professionally prepared but lacks that quality that I'm at a loss to describe.

The is a cafeteria in the ZhurFak just opposite the Okhotny Ryad shopping center. They do a very nice borsch and other lovely soviet style stolovaya food for very reasonable prices. The set meal is usually 180 rubles. I've never paid more than 300 for any meal there.

Is it the one with "no book reading" signs? Loved these. And something midway between a snack and a meal was 120 roubles a year ago. Yes, that's exactly the sort of places I'm talking of.

I tried one of these outlets a while back when last in Moscow. I like the decor and the food and prices were good. Would probably chose them over MuMu actualy.

Ulitsa Rogozhsky poselok 35. The nearest Metro, at least 30 min. away, is Ploshad I'lyicha but the distance is redeemed by a walk through timewarp-stuck Moscow. When in the area look for a prominent belfry. It is seen well from the 3rd Ring.

As of recent I've been dumping "my Moscow" type materials to where.cheap-moscow.com (http://where.cheap-moscow.com). Two source of input are my own preferences (poverty, gluttony, nostalgia and escapism appeared, to my shame, to be my leading motives) , and regular/repeating questions by clients (thus a layer that consists of things touristy). There also is a retro undercurrent, mostly contributed by Alexandra.

If anybody wants to go there I'm game.

There is a place at Новокузнетская called Кoрчма that's pretty tasty food for not very much money. My friends all really like the borsch there. :)
