New genetic evidence shows our ancestors interbred with now-extinct species.

Human & Neanderthal interbreeding (http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/human_evolution/2012/10/neanderthal_and_denisovan_genetics_human_ancestors_interbred_with_extinct.html)

Has anyone done this (rather expensive) genetic testing

You should think twice before calling somebody a Neanderthal :trampoline:

Yes, I done this and Dr. Sykes wrote me a personal letter even about it cos I am Pakistani- but me ancient ancestors are from Greece. I had to detail as much of me family history as I cud in reply- caste origin, what part of the subcontiennt me ancestors are from everything. First time, u got to send a swab of ure mouth for them to get the test result.

I did the National Geographic one a few years ago but it didn't mention Neanderthal.

To me it's obvious there were more forks in the human tree and not just modern humans and neanderthals, seems to me to be impossible for there to be just two. I am sure when we walk down our main streets we all see some similar features in people, it's always fascinated me as to whether that is down to modern person variances or the inclusion of " other " DNA..

For me it's enough to look into the mirror. My superciliary arches have index 3 (highest), I was only one in our summer practice camp on "field" biological disciplines, who had it :verycool:.

All other ppl had index 0-2 (our antropological dept just used all the heap of students for sample investigations).

From the article, it may be that 'a few years ago' the Neanderthal genome was not of a good enough quality for NG to include in the DNA analysis ?

No. This is not correct and stuff cos early modern humans wiped out neanderthals and the last living was was pushed to the edge of europe- to Portugal. There they died.
Humans was from Africa and they hunted the neanderthals and the neanderthals then died off. There was no mixing cos it was impossible even.

Various new studies cast doubt on whether modern humans ever bred with Neanderthals.
