One acquaintance of mine told me that if I went to a pub\bar in the evening \ night and ordered a cup of tea, people would laugh at me.
What is "in fashious" to drink in the evening in a bar or a pub...excapt for beer? lol

Mojitos, mmm :)

Also, mojito's cousins; cuba libres, mai tais, and piņa coladas.

I have a 4kg granite mortar & pestle just for properly crushing the mint leaves

:D

Anything alcoholic, or anything that looks like it could be alcoholic, eg. a non-alcoholic cocktail, non-alcoholic beer. If you don't like alcohol or don't want to drink, you can order soft drinks like lemonade, Coke, fruit juice. Anything hot or made with milk (eg. milkshake) is not so fashionable for the evening.

Interesting answer. It was a long time ago and I also odered some tea....and he gave me to understand that I did something wrong. I didn't have to drive. I just wanted to have some tea while others had beers, coktails, etc... And I felt a little embarrased that I was laughed at......

This is a way out. lol If for instance, I don't want to drink alcoholic beverages, so I will have something non-alcoholic. But recently I fell in love with New Castle brown beer...lol

It is too simple. I am a woman. But I think that... it is not "good manners" for women to drink vodka in Russia. Only men drink vodka, good women don't... hmm or I simply don't go out very often..lol lol lol

That glass looks like the one used for Moscow's 1 kp. communal water dispensers.

Me|Moi  ..er.. *You* are the one always having black caviar :bong: From the tv show I just watched about the Russian Revolution (http://expat.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=450183), the waxy one did not have much tolerance for bourgeous ... :whisper: or anyone else, for that matter.

FatAndy

No, this is smaller one, called stopka, so only 100 ml or less.
. Standard Soviet type vessel was made of thick glass with facets and had 250 ml volume (an example is here: http://www.expat.ru/forum/showpost.php?p=1063783&postcount=3 ).

And black caviar was truly proletarian food... yes, in late Soviet times it was hard to buy but it costed only 4 rub. 50 kop. per 100 g can (while red caviar was 4.20 per 140 g).

nonalcoholic virgin cocktails.... or tea/latte.
A virgin "put cocktail name here" means nonalcoholic:) no need to say it twice)

Ill drink when in the mood to drink, if I'm out but have no desire to drink, i could opt out for water or tea but friends will be pushing to drink with them, so nonalcoholic beer usually helps give the illusion that I'm getting drunk.

I like Cider, but its difficult to find in Moscow; otherwise beer and whisky.

Although recently, we started shooting flavored vodka: Finlandia or Absolut. Pear and grapefruit are quite good.

You could be right about the cider, one bar near me that used to sell it has recently stopped.

Although I have no idea why they would ban it:(

There is no ban, most probably just no demand.

Russia could be the next growth market for cider, according to a new report.

Market analyst Datamonitor has found that cider continues..."

Rob, for some money market analysts will prove you that black is white. For some money more they'll make it in return. So... ;)

Hard cider is good too. Just get some cider, add in a pack of brewers yeast + a few cups of white sugar; then let ferment.

Okay. I see. Instead of the hydraulic press contraption, I'd use a juicer (http://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Homemade-Cider-with-a-juicer-and-no-press/).

Like in brewing beer, you need make sure everything, especially the storage bottles|growlers are sterile. Else, you can end up with hard cider made with wild yeasts of random yeast shiat.

:whisper: For samogon, you can use a pressure cooker (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_make_a_still_out_of_a_pressure_cooker) :sunny: I'm not sure about "the smell" of the mash, though ...

Hello Moscowforever2000!
Thank you for your answer!!! Maybe you will like Moscow and Moscow stuff when you move to this city.
But I wonder why you like vodka and not beer? lol
I would rather drink beer in any pub than vodka. I have always thought that drinking vodka for women is a "mauvais ton". Decent women in Russia do not drink vodka. But when I had that British bf in the past and he did laugh at me when I would order coffee or tea in the evenings in pubs,...lol maybe because he used to be a beer addict... He would always reproach me for ordering what was not "in fashion". I think I was silly enough to think he was right. I should have done my own way as you said right!
Now I can't care less what people will say if I order tea or coffe during evening hours even if it is a very fashionable place. lol
