A friend of mine who lived in Moscow years ago once told me that Moscow is known as the "big potato" but I can find no reference to that anywhere.

Can anyone enlighten me?

might have been the larvae of the colorado beetle, they are around the potatoes. and a pest at it. while the mole cricket is not (at least not to the potatoes).
when i was in primary school we had to pick the beetles from the potatoes. chickens would not eat them and there were no other natural enemies/predators who would kill them. kids were cheaper to use and we got some nice pocket money. only when the beetles realy took over and threatened to destroy the crops would we start to spray with chemicals.
