Since I mentioned the Hemingway Bar in the Ritz Hotel, Paris in another thread I was reminded of the famous story connected with that bar.

This is the place Ernest Hemingway met and fell in love with Mary Welsh, who was to become his wife.(Fourth wife!)

Ernest said to the barman, Bertin, one day, ''My wife doesn't want me drinking any more. When I get home she smells my breath and tells me off.''

So the barman invented an odourless cocktail, vodka and tomato juice.

Hemingway was delighted and told Bertin ''Well done, Bloody Mary never smelt a thing!''

Hence the the BLOODY MARY cocktail.
