Looks like a new production is on the way to the Barbican - http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2012/mar/18/master-margarita-fiends-reunited-review

Not sure why the Guardian seems to think it so 'unstageable'. I saw the British National Youth Theatre attempt it a few years ago (and struggle a bit), but I'd also say Lyubimov's production at Taganka is one of the best things I've ever seen in a theatre. The 1994 film wasn't bad either, but the 2010 production at Gorky MKhAT was a bit too slow for me.

Still, it can be done, and often is.

Viktiuk's very wilful staging was successful in its own way too - although it only attempts to deal with about 10% of the book ;)
