Last Friday I was at some event outside Moscow.
On our way back we got lost and then our bus broke down. We spent quite a while there and nobody stopped to help :( So I arrived home at about 2 am saturday instead of 9 pm friday :(

I think it s unusual (I mean not getting help).. just a bad luck.. Or not?

Sadly, the old adage "Love thy neighbor" does not seem to apply to Russia.. In fact, I'd say the opposite is true. There seems to be a distinct "Hate thy neighbor as much as possible" principle at work here.. For the most part, Russian's just don't seem to love their fellow man. Why is that??

I would not call a usual Russian behaviour.. bad luck... very very very bad luck.
I remember in a similar situation we found help quite fast. Me and my man.

It is a strange situation, if it happens not in Moscow,,,,,but really if you have a problem, you need to ask (to raise a hand) and many will stop.

Untill you do not ask, people will not pay attention indeed (will not offer the assistance), but when you do, you will get eeven more than needed (advice, help, moral support, physical support e.t.c.).

I had a lot of trips by car all over Russia and you will not beleive, even policemen are more helpful there than here in the capital.

03-10-2011, 22:21
I am also surprised that was such a terrible situation when nobody helped. In fact I got help even when I did not need it much, just stop in highway and go out to nearest bushes and when you come back somebody would stop and ask if I need any help:) my usual answer - now - no:) Really, I travel a lot around Russia and CIS countries by car and the level of friendly attitude of fellow drivers is much higher than among people in metro.

Oh you are right. I realized that in usual situation, like when i want to order some food, at cashier desks, at cinema etc.. you have to ASK :).. until that nobody seems to care.

You are true, Capitalism.. But it is not about the system, it is about people. Nobody ever really helps me, and you know what ? I am happy, because i am sucessful and i can handle any situation and i am proud of it.

Homeless ? well look on them and who giving them money.. Most girls and older womens.. You will not see a suit guy giving them money.. and sure you asking why should they do that ? Because they are people not animals…

When i earn money in big capitalistic city, it is like a fee of live, and most i think it is correct … help old lady, help somebody who needs it..

Never get charmed and you'll never be disappointed after — it means somehow you expect people to give you more than they can. Or should i feel ashamed to give you this feeling and immediately start to prove the opposite? As for helping … It is my own business, not a point to get a couple more of scores to climb to the next level of humanism.

Korotky, I have met quite a few expats and you would be surprised how much yourname comes up-you should feel special. Generally, it is everyone on expat is mostly nice but gee that Korotky is one miserable fellow.

I think i would be utterly depressed being in one of your classes at your university, truly. I don't know who or what caused you to be such a gloomy, pessimistic grouch-but gee, banging your head against the wall is better therapy for you than posting on here. Give it a try please.

A great deal of us help a lot of people, no hypcocrisy-we just don't boast about it. My family have been salavtion army for most of my life...and we raise money for the poor, homeless and the unemployed...plus run programs for those trying to escape drugs and alcoholism. Me personally, several times a year I would door knock for various charities such as the red shield appeal and red cross and we sponsor kids in Africa too. Plus a group of us do angel funding to women in India interest free so they can start hobby craft industries and get a real income. I also hope to adopt a Russian orphan one day too.

and of course I help the people I meet on the street in Russia. Not because i want o make myself feel special, rather it is the NORMAL thing to do. It is ABNORMAL to be a selfish pr^ck who doesn't help anyone....if capitalism is so bad , how come I am a child of it? And you are a child of socialism/communism and you have such values?

Russia has some wonderful people, and it also has many faults-but all its faults can be summed up in one thing: you and people think like you.

If you did nothing then don't you think that it's better for you to be a bit shut up ?

:) sure i told you. I am actually very kind to all people i meet and when there are in troubles, i help them by myself.

Some examples from last month :

- When i have seen a car standing on highway at rain with broken tyre, i stoped and ask if they need a help. There was old lady inside a car and sure she accept my help..

- When i have seen car in Prague after midnight with German licence plate, with both blinkers on, i stoped and ask them if they need help. Sure they was a little lost with some problem. I helped them fix the car and the really appreciated that

- When i came to tank station to blow my tyres, i have seen at side old man with old woman in car. He steps behind the tyre and he start to prepare newspaper for his knees. I realized that is not so easy for him and i offered him a help.

- When i am in china, there is many homeless.. All time before i left hotel, i get some coins enough for that i can give to more than one homeless.

- There i Moscow, man standing under crossing of street, playing guitar… sure i gave him money.

- There is old womans selling a flowers, i bought from her some, and i give it her them back with words, that these are for ger.

Do you need more examples ?

I believe that if i need some help, somebody maybe will be like me, and without asking if i need it , will offer me a help..

And you know what ? When you are lost in New York? Somebody ask you if you need some help when they will see you standing with map searching where you are…

And you know what ? When i was at Las Vegas, some Afroamerican guy was waiting at bus station, i was standing few meters from him, looking around.. and he came to me and asked me if i am ok. then also gaved me tickets to cinema…

It is in people man, not in CAPITALISM ! :nono:

I do not expect that automatically will be rewarded by some help to me, but i can feel good when i help somebody...

I am actually very kind to all people i meet...

As an aside and by way of association, below is a famous song from 1939:

On the farm, every Friday
On the farm, it's rabbit pie day.
So, every Friday that ever comes along,
I get up early and sing this little song
Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Goes the farmer's gun.
Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run.
Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
Don't give the farmer his fun! Fun! Fun!
He'll get by
Without his rabbit pie
So run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!

Run Rabbit Run - Flanagan & Allen - YouTube

It was subsequently adapted by Flanagan & Allen to Run, Adolf - Run Adolf, Run, Run, Run! :)

SO BEWARE!!!
On the other hand, we once broke down (80 km West of Moscow) and some guy stopped to help and then towed our broken car for about 100 km (!) to the nearest service station where we got it repaired. He refused to take money. It was 10 years ago though.

10 years is a long time.
It is good to hear, there are some good guys out there.. From my past experience I tend to be a little on edge.

I broke down on the infamous MKAD once(5th lane) some guys in the most dodgy looking Zhiguli you could ever imagine stopped and offered to tow my car away..They towed my car to their cousins cousins garage outside of Moscow..I thought I was in for a real treat, only to find them very polite and helpful...Sure it cost me a arm and a leg but what to expect when buying a Russian car..Live and learn hey!!!

Yes, my above example possibly refers to "Russia which we lost" (the name of one Russian book). Nowadays I never accept any offer on the street or on the road, just for the reasons you are talking about. Just the fact of being offered some unsolicited help looks suspicious in Russia, unlike in Europe or US. Usually when people want help on the road they raise their hand to draw attention. If you just switch on your hazard lights it's not enough to get help, you should ask for help more directly. When smb stops on the roadside to look at the map or make a telephone call, they tend to switch on hazard lights, it helps to avoid getting fined.

She probably left for other reasons; may be to follow ReallyCr*pConcerts to the other site, where he was also eventually banned for his outrageously offensive behaviour!

Ok, so Tolkoraz at least mentions a name. And I agree with his analysis: Ruth123 would not be the person to be bullied and the bully getting away with it.

AstarD: saying that X and Y confirmed something about Z by PM is not an argument. PMs are supposed to remain private.

We're not a tabloid here. If someone told you stuff about Korotky_Gennady or AndreyS, either provide the full story, or don't mention it. Now, this all looks to me like making members suspect without giving them the tools to defend themselves.

If a member is out of line, report the post. Spreading rumours is not polite and it is not fair to put fellow members in a position in which they have to defend themselves against speculations.

Don't think so. Kassandra is not a boozer. Neither is Drtnsnw actually. He's pouring the drinks but "doesn't get high on his own supply".

When I was on University (Amsterdam, in the wicked center, the center of all evil) I loved to be taught, but loved the drinks afterwards as well.

You both have a noble task.

Not any more. I used to work for a brewery, changed my job a few months ago.
But you are right I was doing worse than selling beer - I was producing it :)

Because "Love your neighbor" means do something that is hard for you, particularly when he needs it and you don't want to do it. It's not peculiar to Russia.

Adopting the faith that originated that teaching and taking it seriously and trying to live/enact it would probably go a long way towards changing that kind of environment.

Of course, that means that each of us reading this would have to, uh, start with doing it ourselves and making it a priority in our own lives instead of expecting others to do it for us...
