Pity. They were still on my want-to-see-live-concert list.

Michael Stipe on the official website:
"A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.

Thanks for sharing - I hadn't heard the news, but am not shocked... I was fortunate to see 'em several times, including at a roller skating rink on Long Island, NY during the Reckoning tour. They were a truly great band, and a huge influence on the '80s "college radio" world that changed the musical landscape and later developed into "alternative."

Good band in their day...I saw R.E.M live in Catania Sicily many moons ago..Radiohead opened for them,a fairly unknown song called 'Creep' went down very well that night.:bong:

I saw them in the early 80's too at Rutgers University. The concert was free and outdoors. It started to rain and so they played Who'll Stop the Rain by CCR. They went on to bigger and better things since then. The song 'Don't Fall on Me' reminds me of Moscow a bit. Anyhoo, good luck to em!

I'd first like The Rolling Stones to finally take the hint.

They had some outstanding songs and were part of my growing up.
