Victory in the campaign to ban circus animals

MPs voted to ban wild animals in circuses last night after David Cameron's attempts to bully Conservative backbenchers into voting against the measure backfired and ended in a humiliating public defeat. In a decision hailed by campaigners as an "historic victory for animal welfare and protection", MPs of all parties unanimously backed a ban and the Government signalled that it would introduce one, ending forever the days of lions, tigers, elephants and other wild animals in the big top.

No more zoos; no more pets; no more school mascots or pets in the room (and certainly no more animals in the science class for studying or disecting!), no more animals on the farm for our food.

I agree. This is something I detest when people put these very colorful fishes in small containers just to bring some color in their otherwise dull life. Its a crime.

I fully support this ban. Some animals trainers treat their beasts very cruelly.

But most do not.

By your reasoning, some parents beat their children cruelly, so we should ban people having and raising children.

Hmm... I think we should ban the parents who treat their kids the way you said... to raise children... Why not ?

I agree. So why not, instead of banning all animals in the circus, instead prosecute those who beat and mistreat the animals in their care, and let the ones who don't do those horrible things continue to love their animals and delight audiences with their performances?

Korotky Gennady

and let the ones who don't do those horrible things continue to love their animals and delight audiences with their performances?

Okey, let it be so... But what about Zoos ?

I red that it's very hard for animals to be there... Huge majority of them even lose their sexual wishes... Some die from sadness of all life to be in cage... They are in permanent depression there...

Animals are like people in some way.

Maybe because they are animals and in all probability do not like working in a circus to delight people!

If people enjoy working, why do you think animals don't?

It is called empathy. Jumping thru hoops, fire rings and planks maybe work and fun for humans but not for animals.

You're right, but I don't think most circus performers do that with their animals. They give them hand signals to do the feats and tricks they do. Cracking a whip in a lion's or tiger's face seems pretty foolish to me.

It is still about controlling the free spirit of the animal or in fact precisely breaking that free will where carrot and stick play an equal role.

Unfortunetely they do... Many told me that even a dog will be obeying to you when you become cruel enough to the pet.

( One trainer adviced my mom to become a cruel enough to her dog who tries to express it's will... )

KG my friend is the assistant director of the Moscow zoo and they have an elephant there that killed it's trainer just because he beat her too much that should make you some what happy.

Also zoos do help save animals by breading them and making people aware of the need to save them before we kill them all off. The Moscow zoo raises money every year for the Siberian tigers. How much did you give or what have you done to help?

You can go to the Moscow zoo and sponors animals or help out with fund raising, I'm sure they will be happy.

I'd also like to say that the people who work at the zoo make very little money themselves.

That is true that some zoos do a lot for conservation of animals in one way or the other. The sad and questionable part is do they have to do this inside the cities and everywhere. A lot of animal conservation is done at location itself to ensure the animal experiences an environment similar to where it is supposed to be found.

AstarD
24-06-2011, 16:51
Another function of zoos is to see the animals in a safe environment. Most people can't travel everywhere to see the animals in their natural habitat, but most can go to the zoo. It's important for zoos to be large and have large aires for the animals and to keep them occupied with interesting activities.

BoZz
24-06-2011, 16:57
It is like this for everything in life. Not everyone can see everything. We cannot watch QE II, Taj Mahal, Obama or Mandela in their natural habitat too!

For big cats, sleeping and just chillaxing out with the pride, eating, hunting--just like with little cats.

For most animals, in the wild they spend a great deal of time trying to find food. So the zoos try to make them hunt it or find it.

One of the reasons wild animals are used to such large territory in the wild is that they spend a lot of time and space roaming around looking for prey. They don't need to do that in a zoo, but they have to be kept busy with games and hunting. Zookeepers put their food in special boxes that they have to figure out how to open, etc.

We most certainly already do that with humans. Do you do whatever you want and go wherever you want? No. You live in a tiny space, go to work in a crowded metro, sit in your tiny cubicle at work, and go back home to your tiny place.

Do you do that because some alien has placed you on display? Probably not. But you do it because the authorities need to keep tabs on you, and you have to earn a living, etc.

We're all just performing circus animals in one way or another. Learn to enjoy it.

What you seem to forget in all of this is that we have a choice in life, this makes us humans. The animals do not.

That's not the case. Broncs and Bulls buck because there is a strap placed around their genitals and a person sitting on top of them, and it bothers them. As soon as that strap comes off, they usually stop. Have you ever been to a rodeo, Willy. It's completely different to corrida, because the animals are not tortured to death.
