We're headed to St. Petersburg for a few days in September and are looking for a decent hotel.

By decent, I mean western standards of cleanliness and somewhat central (not much more than a 10 minute walk from Nevsky, the Hermitage or other main sites). We're also looking for something that won't break the bank. Our budget is less than $200 per night and we want a nice hotel, not a short-term apartment rental.

We've thought about Stony Island (http://www.stonyisland.ru/), Marco Polo, and Arkadia.

Has anyone stayed at these hotels? Can you recommend them or any others?

Thanks in advance.

This might be a little above your price range, but the Petro Palace was a nice hotel when I stayed there a few months back.

Thanks, jheisel, I'll look into it.

At a first glance it's above what we're budgeting for hotels, especially when we've found some other 4*'s for less.

Just for the common good of others here at Expat.ru, I'll share a site I've found with some decent hotel listings in St. Petersburg. The prices there are a few hundred rubles cheaper than the official sites of the hotels:

PrivetSPB.ru (http://www.privetspb.ru/)

I'll probably book my accommodations through them and I'll certainly let you all know the results if I do.

Good site, thanks. I find there 2 room apartment only 40$ per night (fontanka emb. 60). I will recommend it for my friends.

I can recommend the Alexander House hotel. They have two hotels called Alexander House 1 and the other is called no. 2.

AH1 is better but they are both very good and within your budget. They aren't quite as central as you have asked for but it will cost you about 150R in a gypsy cab to Nevsky.

AH1 is alo about a 10-15min walk from a good English pub called Dickens that serves nice beer and food.

Try the "Sovetskaya Hotel" (it's now called something else, and, sorry, I cannot recall the new name ... now part of a local chain). It's an old soviet era hotel, a little bit out of the center (150 rubles by taxi, also metro nearby) but recently modernised, good simple rooms (about 800 of them), good service and security, breakfast usually included, and about 2000 rubles a night. Good value for money. Great views over the city if you get a room on the higher floors.

I run two small guesthouses in the centre of St Petersburg. One is in a fascinating Style Moderne building on a very quiet street just off Nevsky (behind the Nevsky Palace and Radisson SAS); the other is on ulitsa Marata in a quiet courtyard behind the Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic. Large rooms with lots of period features, huge bathrooms, and a fair amount of common space. Rates: 60-90 euros per night, including breakfast, depending on room size and number of people staying. And we can usually give Muscovites a room just as soon as they step off the overnight train (we're about a 10-minute walk from the station). Our contact numbers are: +7 9046021340 (me) and +7 9219426071 (Rauf)

I found a really groovy hotel quite near the Moscow Railway Station, close to a Catholic Church. It turned out that it had just opened and they gave me a 10% discount. Really friendly staff and although there are only seven rooms, they are almost palatial!! Their site is - (http://www.kamerdiner.com). Thoroughly recommended.
