Because you are supposed to mix water in the basin and then wash whatever needs to be cleaned by splashing water onto it, or dipping into the stagnant water. It's a miniature bath!

I read an American say the British use less washers (little round rubber things inside the taps) because the temperature change is much less. I'm not fan of the separate ones though.

For the same reason the Brits have 500 different kinds of incompatible electric plugs.

The single arm faucet is a rather recent invention.

To prevent contamination of the precious cold tap water line with whatever junk that comes or may come from your dirty mixer, hot line or whatever. Wherever they have a mixer (hotels?), there is a barrel somewhere where the cold water is dripping into it from the main so that it has no chance to flow back.

They love an extreme sensation of "average": One hand feels water of a scorching 60C, the other of freezing 10C.

The average is 35C - and that's quite a pleasant temperature! ;)

AT FIRST 'we' had only cold water, and needed only one tap. Later we got hot water and so to make it working, we just put the hot water tap next to the cold water tap.(mixers came into fashion much later). And tradition is a hard thing to change. also if ONE thing breaks or needs replacing, you don't have to replace the whole lot. it is much cheaper to repair ONE tap, or replace it, then a complete mixer unit.

Benedict,

But this is also true that water costs much in england and so two taps is a reasonable saving of money, isn't it?

Its quite simple; Us British simply like to be different, and perhaps even unique! :)

As any Irishmen will tell you, the English and even more so the Welsh are not waterproof and this is why: they don't wash; and they invested so heavily in a Navy - whilst the Irish invasion plan was swimming based, (and much later hitching rides on discounted airlines going to places the Brits enjoy not being able to drink properly in), which kinda explains the absence of an Irish Empire, the only place within striking distance was full of smelly Welshmen.

The need for mixer taps only makes sense if you occasionally have the need for warm water - D'English have no such need, cold water is simply there to further immaculate their nasty flat beer, and Hot water has only the dual purposes of boiling the taste out of anything green and Tea.

Spent 10 months in London when i was younger, this drove me nuts. Never understood the point of separate taps. is it that hard to install a ****ing faucet???

Brits are just backwards and odd people period.

- They wash in dirty water to save money
- Mostly too broke to afford proper heating in the winter which is why it's always cold and they have a million fireplaces in their houses
- Drive on the wrong side of the road
- Drink tea with milk
- The solution to any traffic problem involves building a roundabout, or a roundabout around a roundabout
- Still have some form of monarchy which is respected
- Talk with a weird accent

-tea with milk roxors.
-Russians are no better at solving traffic problems, just look at Moscow and most big cities in Russia
- Russians drive like shit, on both sides of the road too often
-Putin will be in power longer than any British Monarch most likely
-some Russians still don't wash and smell, regardless of the abundant water we're so proud of. body odour in the subway is evidence of that.

- Russians can and do afford way too many cars.
- Putin is a fag can't debate that
- The ones who smell are most likely from outside Moscow and came here to work.

Unfortunately this is the problem of middle aged men just as it is))))no matter where they live)))))i believe,it's not the question of washing:)

at least, i m so happy that here in russia we have normal taps))))

p.s.if only the english could see my way of using these original taps....:D

I'll have to disagree. Hygiene is something that is introduced and taught at a young age in civilized countries. Like Canada.

in 16 years, i've almost never smelled bad breath or sweat odour off a person in a public place. and if I did, 99.9% it was a FOB immigrant. 80% of those, were from the USSR. it's gross and repulsive frankly.

That is quite true. In Russia people wear the same clothes more than one day, in Canada you wear clothes once and wash them.

80% from the USSR? You kidding me? What about the arabs? The ones that don't wash because of some religious bullshit?

But yeah mostly immigrants for sure.

yes, but here washing machines didn't become the household norm up until a decade ago.

arabs smell of cologne mostly. Slavic people smell of odour. btw there's no part of Islam that forbids people to bathe. Infact at some point in time they do it more often, i beleive during Ramadan.

you're a f**king creep bro.

I'm on a life long quest trying to convert barbaric Russians to the civilised practise of milk in one's tea. After 8 years i can proudly boast of one convert!!

I've been on this round-a-bout many times. You can see in the photo (Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire) there are six 'mini' round-a-bouts around it. We are just ahead of our time as a nation! ;)

This is exactly what I'm talking about. And yes I know of this "magic" roundabout. I can't imagine driving it on the wrong side of the road.
