Rosbalt
Russian Population May Be Halved within 70 Years

MOSCOW, October 16. The Russian population is dwindling by 0.7% every year.
If this process continues then the population will be halved within the
next 70 years. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, these figures were made
public at the international forum Quality of life: collaboration between
science, power, business and community.

It was also mentioned that the health of the Russian population started
deteriorating rapidly at the beginning of the 1990s and the death rate is
now 50% higher than it was in the middle of the 1980s. About 7.7 million
people have died prematurely from heart disease, strokes and other causes
since the Soviet Union broke up. The birth rate has also halved.

The situation in the Central and North-West Federal Districts is
particularly alarming. Here the population is dwindling by over 1% each
year. Such figures usually signal a humanitarian catastrophe and the
extinction of a whole species.

Do you live in a gated expat community or something?

Do you live in a gated expat community or something? Yes, I've seen it before as well. But this WAS a recent news item, regardless.

I do not understand your refererence to a gated community. Am I to assume that people (Russians) are falling over dead on the streets in large numbers and, if I lived at Rosinka, I would never see them? (Not that I haven't seen a few dead people since I arrived but they hardly qualify as a major factor in the death rate.

My question was "what do you think?" as in "do you have an opinion on this situation?" It wasn't "do you have some smart-ass remark to show how witty/clever/well-informed you think you are?"

Many questions are repeated on this site every few weeks - how to get a visa, apartment questions, etc. I can't recall this question before, though it has been in the news.

opinion: it sure does suck
opinion: they should really rework the immigration legislation
opinion: maybe they should (even tho i am personally generallly against it) rethink abortion legislation

question: why has this story been repeated so many times in Western presses and ignored equally as many times by Russians?

this is a *critical* situation. and as far as this issue is concerned, Russians just keep grabbin they ankles...

just IMHO...
