Is there anywhere in downtown Moscow where you can get a decent sandwich? As in a sandwich in the sense we would understand the word in the rest of the world? - something like Pret-a-Manger in the UK etc.?

There are Pains Quotidienne in a few places around. Noviskiy Bulvar, Kamergersky, White Square and Europeiskiy.

and Moscow Times has:

Prime/Kreshchatik
9, Ul. Arbat
8:30am-11pm / 739-0014(M. Arbatskaya)

"The closest Moscow gets to Pret a Manger: freshly made sandwiches with bread that doesn't curl up at the ends, but there can be mayo overload. Makes deliveries in the center."

There is a direct clone of Pret-A-Manger called Pyat, but it's not nearly so good. There is one on Kamergeisky pereulok.

Also on Kamergeisky is PRIME, who are a bit better as a sarnie-shop.
