I know this doesn't necessarily answer your question, but have you considered Skype ?

It's kind of like MSN Messenger. If you have a headset (which you can get at any electronics store for 200 rubles, and you and the US party have both installed the (free) software, then you can talk for absolutely nothing.

If you don't want to go computer to conputer and would rather make a computer to landline call, you can do so anywhere in the world for 3 US cents per minute. Can't get much better than that.

Just a recommendation. I'm sure others will revert with some good calling card companies as well.

I use Mango Tele.Com. The card itself is called Pozvoni na rodinu and comes in different languages of FSU countries. A 150 rouble card gave me over 100 minutes of talk time (I think they recently brought their prices down).

my daughter uses zebra and i sometimes use it to but the quality is sometimes poor ,however for a 10usd card she gets 200or so minutes to the uk

Are there any internet based accoutns where you don't need a card and can just top up online using a credit card?

Try www.call2.com, they charge about 4p (UK) per minute back to Australia. Quality just ok and you can set-up calls via internet (ringback) at no extra cost and you can use it worldwide.
