There are exceptions, of course... but it always cracks me up to see some strikingly gorgeous woman moving her arms and torso like one of those skeletons on a pole they used to have in 8th grade science class. Not that I can do any better, what with my degenerative honky disease.

MJ`s right, Andy - wooo, you`ve been in the wrong places of late... ;-))

Gold medal for sweeping statements olypmics there.

Like saying why don't most americans have a sense of humour?

Yeah, I knew I'd get that one. Just trying to provoke a little commentary. But there's at least some degree of truth in it, I think...

... and Americans do have senses of humor. But they're really, really fat.

Actually, I got severely out- boogied whilst drunk on a riverboat and nearly ended up falling in the Volga river, smashed out of my head at 2am in the morning... and I can`t swim even when sober. ;-)))

That was quite a night, that was... ;-)

Well, mjhamson, as a Brit myself I can say that the usual factors come into play - sedentary lifestyle, too many convenience foods and the other factors which have also plagued the US and now plague us. Having said that, one can also notice that the most overweight are the working classes as buying good nourishing food tends to be more expensive than the other type and if you go on the metro and see the poorer people here, you will notice that they are also not slim:) Overweight is not just a Western disease.

Stef`s right, here. Now, you can`t exactly call me "snake hips" myself, but I do try and look after myself and I`ve been out of work and confined to the" sedentary lifestyle " for quite some time, MJ, but - I came back from two years abroad and was quite astounded with what I saw. I look quite fine compared to a lot of the blobs around here. ;-)))))))) (Well, I`d like to think so. ;-))) )

Over in Volgograd, I didn`t see many fat men - or ANY Russian women - who really DO look after themselves (sometimes to excess....) The point seems to be that life in Russia`s totally different - people socialise more, get out and lead a more active life, walk everywhere (big factor - no car) and there`s no milkman, less dairy products...... in fact, they`re so healthy that a lot of males die at 58 from alcohol poisoning. Swings and roundabouts. ;-)))) But. I`d rather be in Russia.

(Ex) fiancee rings me in Germany once.....

"Hi darling, I just bought us a new fridge - two metres high"......

"Oh-my-God !!! I`ll be fat !!! "

;-)))))))))))))))

and then she discovered Walls Vienetta (a kind of ice cream cake) and - well !! I think I needed to fatten her up, anyway. ;-)) Oh yes, she was ASTOUNDED you could buy strawberries in the supermarket in January.... she wanted to try *everything* - all different new kinds of food - bland, uninteresting diet in provincial Russia. So the girls are thin, but very bored with the food. ;-)))

Wow, she could dance, though.... ;-)))

PS the price of decent food here is ridiculous, as well. Much more expensive than in the US.....

Excellent post of Dave and as you say - what IS attractive and someone might consider you snake hips?:)))
I go regularly to a fitness club where the women are all skinny and gorgeous but I think that's exceptional and it's the same in Western fitness clubs. Those sort of women look like that before they start going to fitness clubs and the rest is simply polishing:)
As for food - (probably will get a lot of posts criticising me here) - it's very hard to find decent stuff here on the whole (in my opinion) and as I walk everywhere and walk LONG distances plus the gym and can't find anything nice to eat I'm usually slimmer than in the UK where we have such a large and appetising choice of foods.
Here, most people tend to eat very unhealthily and whilst this may not cause them to put as much weight on as convenience foods do, the affect on the arteries is much worse. I mean saturated fat rich food like the eternal sausage and luncheon meat which is ubiquitous here. Very unappetising:(

Absoutely right, Mel. That`s also why Russians spend hours cooking - the choice of food isn`t so hot - well, outside of Moscow, and the quality`s pretty dire - everything from noodles to toothpaste to medicine is low quality - so. Buy Russian, put up with low quality - buy Western - pay high prices, or.... make it yourself. ;-))

It`s like the "buttermilk pancake" link where I suggested "Make them yourself" - over in the West, we`re conditioned to believe that anything that doesn`t come in a packet isn`t real food. I like cooking for myself, anyway. And do it when I can. The other theory is that the busy Western lifestyle leaves us with no time to cook for ourselves - but - Russians have much busier lives and somehow manage to do it.....

Mind you...... ;-)))))

How is it that I think that the worst thing that`s happened to Russia in YEARS is..... McGonads ? ;-))))

Hey, look - "victims". ;-)))) Of their parents` stupidity...... ;-)))

it's a NATIONAL tradition, andylip. No exceptions. Those whom you call exceptions were apparently Americans. As for ur own dancing abilities, are u sure u don't have Russian roots. It would have explained everything and be a nice end of this thread.

Ahhh...then I shall pull out the dreaded "double negative, triple entendre, reverse sweep pivot" statement...

Gee...you really can't dance badly. :D :D :D

NOTE: Don't try this at home, viewers. A statement like that could cause arm flailing, heart paplatations, and severe hip gyrations...leading to a dance-like movement.

I do have Russian roots... both sides of the family. Perfect ending, as you say.

Oh these people and their 'roots.' Andylip, if you were born in the US and your parents were (and who knows, probably grandparents) your're AMERICAN! You seem to have an identity crisis:)
And stop criticising Russians about their dancing skills. No-one dances as well as they do - for example:
the world's top ice dancers are Russian
The Kirov ballet and the Bolshoi also
As are many Ukranian and ethnic male dancing troupes who are AMAZING
The gym I go to has marvellous Russian dance coaches in all styles

Have you seen the Girlie group Belastachya. Those women may be beautiful, they may be able to sing, but please stand still. Collectively they form a klutz, no rhythm whatsoever those ladies.
