Maybe you collect something or you like to make model planes or maybe you have a hobby like the mayor of Las Vegas. In fact I know a few of you do.

The mayor, who was criticized for his alcohol-related responses to the kids' questions, which including saying one of his hobbies was drinking , testily told a City Hall press conference that he was "proud" he told the truth.

Asked if he thought he had a drinking problem, Goodman said: "Absolutely not. No. I love to drink." (http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/sun/2005/mar/04/518392892.html)

Kobster, here is an insult just for you:

You are a bleating foal, a curdled staggering mutant dwarf smeared richly with the effluvia and offal accompanying your alleged birth into this world. An insensate, blinking calf, meaningful to nobody, abandoned by the puke-drooling, giggling beasts who sired you and then killed themselves in recognition of what they had done.

Oh, no ! Another personal attack by a moderator ! :D

I collected sports cards and eventually became a dealer, doing card shows. I had over 150,000 cards. from about the 8th grade on, when I needed some cash, I could just dig in my collection and go down to the local card shop and sell a few cards and come away with a few hundred bucks. In the card biz, I also accumulated lots of autographs of famous people and also some really cool non-sports cards. I got rid of most of my cards, but kept about 3,000 of the best ones.

Alright, seriously ? I used to collect 'submarine covers'. These are stamped (but not posted) envelopes with decorative cachets issued for each major event in a sub's life: keel laying, commissioning, launch, decommissioning, and (god forbid) loss.

Some of them, depending on the sub and the event got quite rare. original Thresher and Scorpion 'covers' could go for hundreds of dollars (because they had both been lost at sea). I had (collection is stored away in my parents' attic) a original Scorpion launch cover. The pride of my collection.

Okay. I've now officially exposed myself as a nerd.

The definition of a hobby is taking part, making an individual effort if you like. Cinema and television require nothing from you except watching, unless James T, you are the real James T and thus it's rather more than a hobby...

Watching, enjoying, studying, analyzing, memorizing, learning trivia and folklore, discussing, debating, occasionally taking an active part in.... :D

One could say the same thing about enjoying music or going to the theatre or attending spectator sports or horseracing or reading or ... a lot of other things people consider hobbies, couldn't they then? :suspect:

DJ Biscuit
16-03-2005, 17:52
Exactly.

Stamp collecting (perish the thought) is a hobby because it requires the hobbyist to learn, look for, put in some stupid book, display, research etc. Reading a book is not a hobby on the other hand. I as usual was being pedantic, just saying there's a difference between a hobby and relaxing or spending leisure time at the game.

The difference is between let's say. My hobby is football, playing or watching? One is a hobby the other is not.

Shatneresque
16-03-2005, 18:02
Right. And I don't just vegetate on the couch, letting my alpha waves go flat. I use what I see to make my life a bit more interesting. The degree to which you get into something and then apply your knowledge is what makes it a hobby.

DJ Biscuit
16-03-2005, 18:06
