Ned,

This is an unfortunate example of just how important television has become to the political process, not only in America, but everywhere else on the globe to varying degrees as well. It also demonstrates how the blurring of news and entertainment and infomercials leaves the American public unconcerned and uncomplaining, so "planted" stories by the policy wonks in Washington easily slip under the radar of popular viewership. Not to worry, though, the generation walking around today wired into iPods, MP3 players and doing cell phone text messaging are so busy destroying their native language in chat rooms they soon won't be able to understand anything that is not delivered in ICU Speak.

Ned,

As a former member of the profession yourself, don't you think it's an equally as damning practice and indictment of the media and journalism as well as politics ?

Ned,

Don't start agreeing with either one of us...it'll wreck your well deserved reputation for obstreperous objections to much of what we write about! :-)

.. every country gets the government it deserves and votes for..
every 4/5/6 years people have the right and power to choose, if they are just to lethargic or don't care, well so be it! even if a president or government comes to power through swindle / bouth votes / wrong vote count / intimidation or whatever , you can not fool ALL the peole all the time. and while some countries mature and learn democracy ( ukraina) others just degenerate (usa?), as i said, you get what you deserve...

Benedikt,

You are certainly right about we all deserve the governments we get, but you must remember, too, that America has had nearly 300 years to mature from the corrupt governments of Europe and has done so with such success that now, liked spoiled children with all the wonderful gifts that our particular unique form of government has give us, we are perhaps sliding away from that hard earned privilege of a mature form of governance. On the other hand, Ukraine is just now beginning to get a slight taste of the maturing of which you speak. All countries seem to go through cycles of development and decay, but the most positive sign of hope for the future is that whatever the older generation denies to the younger generation, eventually the younger generation will take for itself. This is what we have seen most dramatically demonstrated with the Orange Revolution in Ukraine.

exactly, and that decadence is the worse to watch when you see people on the streets in ukraine desperate for such a great system.
