View Full Version : Restarting our Moscow Photography Club

I've been watching how well the Moscow Expat and Travel Social Group was going as an indication of whether of not to try and restart our photography club. I received this email just now:
Members of Moscow Expat and Travel Social Group,
Your Organizer, ***** ******* just stepped down without nominating a replacement. Without an Organizer, Moscow Expat and Travel Social Group will shut down on January 20, 2010.

I was a member of this group and I understand the frustration the director had when there are over 200 native English speaking members, and only 1 or 2 show-up for the monthly get-togethers. Usually at least around 20 would say they would show up and then maybe only 2 would show-up. Its kind of frustrating to make reservations and reserve a room in a restaurant or club based on the number who say they would show up and then do not.

So me and the other member based on this most likely will pass on trying to restart the club. Instead when spring comes, I may make an announcement here about lets meet at so and so place and take a photography walk, I usually do this quite often, I have even written articles about some of the old historic streets here. So most likely I will just make an announcement here about a walk I'm taking and those who want to go can meet me me at so and so place and we'll go. That way its no big deal if nobody shows up since I'm going on this walk any way.

I'm really sorry that the Moscow Expat and Travel Social Group is shutting down, but it looks as if nobody wants to replace the director and I can not blame them after all the trouble the last director had with people saying they would show up and then do not. My decision is not firm and I may restart the photography club or not, but based on how the Moscow Expat and Travel Social Group went, I'm just not really inclined to buy tickets for a tour and then hardly anybody shows up and I lose this money.

I agree, instead of trying to restart the club, that involves a lot of logistics. It is better to start it as an informal gathering/meeting on the interest of photography. A post with the event can be created and those interested can include their name into the list.

On the other-hand, since it is very cold out in the streets, we could have a gathering to get-to-know each other & exchange/share photography tips.

I propose to start one session to "test" for response & turn out

Another option we used to use in winter was to hold online meeting by skype since this is how many of use keep in touch with our families back home and use skype in our work. They were pretty lively and fun, especially if you have video setup. I think I'll be free on the 17th.

I'll put my name down- though 11 am on a Sunday morning is a bit early for me I have to say. What's the idea? To sit in a cafe and talk about cameras and photography? Or to start in a cafe than go on a photo-safari walk around the Arbat area? Either sounds good.

What kind of cameras do people use? I use a little digital a lot for convenience but most of all I enjoy film and vintage cameras. I will bring some along.

I think for the beginning it will be great to get acquainted, then to decide how and what we will do in the club, as I think.

yes it will b great to get acquainted first, and if the weather is not bad, we can do a short photo trip down old arbat road.

how we will determine us in a cafe?

Ian G
14-01-2010, 11:27
sailormoon-any group of more than 5 people should be pretty obvious in a cafe at that time, especially if they are speaking english- but I suuggest that we make sure there are a couple of cameras on the table to make it clearer.

Might want to skip walking down Arbat, something like -5 degrees or -25 Celsius. But Arbat has some interesting side streets, the residence of the US ambassador is close on a side street. a lot of nice old churches also. But its going to be a butt buster weeekend if you know what I mean.

-13C and sunny is a forecast for Sun for now.
On Sundays I usually visit parks like Kolomenskoe (3 chirches and some old-style buildings) or Tsaritsino (1 chirch + revived palace + some other old-style buildings). So if it will be not so cold, maybe we all can go together, it's not so far from center by metro.

people say they will want to show up and then have something come up, even the guy who said he was starting this club said he could not show up, then posts and says if the weather is clear he wants to go to Tsaritsyno. So I guess getting this club restarted is not as important to him as he thought. So I guess I will pass of this. I'll be at Kolmenskoye myself where the wooden palace was rebuilt, I want to photograph the palace covered in snow and I might inside the palace if its open, but I'm sure not going to try and walk down the icy paths, I broke my arm a couple of years ago when I slipped on ice in my neighborhood park taking photos and once is enough for me. Best of luck to everybody with this club.

To avoid overchill I can propose Boulevard Ring (Bul'varnoe Kol'tso) - surrounding very center of Moscow - there are some nice buildings and monuments on it, and a lot of cafes on the way to get warm and grab a cup of tee/coffe. And it's convenient to reach from Old Arbat.

Another thing proposal - to go to Vorobievy Gory - Uni area with a good city landscape view place and some tracks in eco green areas.

I also investigate other parks which can be included further.

Depends on weather of course. -16 and partly cloudy is Sun forecast for now.

small digital camera can also take good pictures. U can still join. there should be no restriction on the type of camera used :)

My wife uses a old sony cybershot DSC-P100 5mp camera, these are some of her pictures from our recent trips to finland. All I did was do a white balance & sharpen all the pics. Only the picture of the church @ helsinki had HDR treatment.

If you are not decided on your Sunday excursion yet, I would recommend you to visit one more Botanic Garden. It is the oldest in Russia, small, beautiful and almost in the center of Moscow. It is called the Pharmaceutical Garden – the Moscow State University Botanic Garden.
http://mosbudokan.ru/personal/gard/9574.jpg

They have several trees oldest in Moscow and they still preserve initial classical layout.
In spring it looks fantastic (http://mosbudokan.ru/personal/gard1.html)
I’ve seen an add somewhere that now they have blooming orchids and bromeliads on display in the Palm Greenhouse.

The address is Prospect Mira, 26. It is about 2 minutes walk from metro station “Prospect Mira” (“Проспект Мира») on the orange or ring line. To get in you should take a passage through café “Vapiano” (кафе "Вапиано".) Entrance fee is 100 rbl. and 180 for entrance + greenhouse.

Coincidently, i was also told today about this garden with a green house where there are flowers blooming. I know it is a little late to plan for a photo taking trip, whoever is interested, can add to the list. This time it is 1pm. The green house will definitely be warmer than outside and there are cafes around too.

to be honest i am up for anything. i am just starting out so to a degree i am more interested in the picture taking process than necessarily the subject matter as i am still ... well... finding out what it is i like.

i was wondering if maybe we should have a theme. so how about focusing on landscape photography but then i do not really know where it is we should go to take these landscape photos.

but really open to anything...

andyUK

if we do not like landscape as a theme, we can do any other themes people like and most importantly are willing to volunteer to lead

BTW, may it is worth making pictures of Moscow interesting buildings (old, just picturesques and so on).

The point is Moscow is changing all the time and some buildings (place) are replaced with new and so on..

I do not mean Krasnaya ploschad, but even Okhotny Ryad was different 14 years ago (completely).

After having made enough good and interesting photoes, we can place them on the site (special folder) or creat a new site specialy for that!

What do you think abotu the idea?

then we can agree on the part of moscow, we will send our landing force to explore the area!

Sounds like a good idea, I end up taking architectural shots around Moscow, especially the older buildings that might be there in the future........Up for it if other people are. Got any ideas where you would like to start?

is there a mtng this weekend? and what about the next weekend (as I'm in Saint-Petersburg till Thursday next week)

andyUK
05-02-2010, 21:40
so do we actually have anybody who is not a newbie who wants to go for a walk on sunday? cause all the knowledge i have is auto settings and a book that i read this week. that is all.

i am not sure there is much point in 5 beginners going for a pict walk.

my plan was to go to check out lefortovo. apparently this is meant to be the most mysterious part of moscow and a paradise for photographers.
it is meant to have a lot of german/lutheran crying angels statues, a monument to the french that died in 1812 and to frech pilots that died during ww2 defending USSR.

now, it will depend on how cold it is. if it is -20, i aint doing it as when i took pictures last time in -20 i could not care less for exposure, apeture or me composition to be honest.

if we do have someone with experience and we want to take pictures in any weather I suggest we meet sunday 11 am. I suggest starbucks whcih is close to arbatskay tube station. (so not the one where we met first with Shannon) i believe that the boulevard ring is not far so we can walk along it although i do not know if there is anything interesting one way or another. or we can walk along arbat.
11 am is not early last time lots of people turned up. and it gets dark and even colder fast.

it is not a photography club. More like a group of like-minded people going for a photography outing. The past few outing was organised by me. This month, I am busy and the weather is also lousy. so I did not organise anything. Hopefully April will be better and I am thinking of organising another outing.

Hope that you will be able to join :)

unfortunately it is a bit dead. there were a few good outtings but then nothing for a while. this is not really an official club just a few ppl getting together.

i still do try and go out picture hunting if i am in moscow during the w/e. So we could try set something up. i think the problem was that everybody except for shannon were beginners and ppl felt that there was no point for a bunch of beginners to go on photoshoots.

i think if we could find someone with the experience who would be willing to invest time and effort into us we could get this going. i think a group of beginners with no guidance won't last.

btw for those that speak russian there is a photo festival this weekend in sokolniki.

I am out of the city for the next couple of weekends but would definitely be interested. I think that there is an opportunity to go one of the follwoing ways:-
- Do these photowalks with people of mixed ability so that the more experienced can coach the less experienced people coming along.
- Keep the photowalks for people with experience
- Or grade the photowalks by level of experience required (although this may be pretty subjective)

Another approach might be that as well as location for the walks be some kind of theme i.e. Candid Street, landscape, outdoor portraits, etc. This might give the opportunity for people with varying levels of experience to learn something new whilst giving a nominated experienced photographer/photographers to pass on knowledge.

How does this sound? Or could just keep it as an informal photowalk group with little structure as it is now.

I like the themes idea. I think what we are lacking is an experienced photographer who is willing to invest his/her time to teach other people.

Any experienced photographers want to volunteer?

To be honest I would not even mind paying some reasonable if someone said they would teach me!

At the moment, I am not really able to attend any of the 'informal gatherings'... but the idea of a photography club sound fun!
Again, I cannot participate in any 'photo-walks' at this time but I do have do have a few 'natural themed' pictures I've taken up here in the Colorado mountains that I am willing to share!!:11215:

Depends on what you want to immortalize with your camera :)

I like walking in Moscow centre - Ostrozhenka, Patriarshie Prudy, Kitay-Gorod, Taganka, Arbat, Zamoskvorechie, Yakimanka - have each their own spirit...

If you like parks I would suggest Muzeon - this one must be interesting for photographers imho.
