If you are running Windows™, one program will take very good care of your laptop's harddisk — it is called Disk Defrag, and available for free from Auslogics.com here (http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download). One thing to do in it — go to Settings → Program settings → Algorithms and select "Move system files to the beginning of the disk". See the screenshot (http://s41.radikal.ru/i093/0912/ea/2c22d6792df2.png)

Also, besides normal defrag, from time to time do defrag+optimise, its available under the dropdown menu on main Defrag button.

Enjoy the ride!

What's SSD?

What's SSD?

Solid State Drive. It's like a hard drive but with no movable parts. It's like a big flash drive but it's much faster. It reads and writes at 250MB/s.

USB Flash drive is around 25MB/s.

Can I defrag my life???? Seriously I have Windows Vista !!! I hate to even say that name- Nothing but trouble. The computer crashes and they keep asking me to update the PC with downloads.

Windows Vista - The biggest mistake in computer history !!!

It's ridiculously expensive in Moscow but not in USA. :D

I might buy one on my next trip back to the States.

Am I missing something? Why defragment outside, when it already available within windows anyway. What's the difference?

LOL! If you got windows like me, and you could only buy home edition in Russian it is even worse. It is bad enough having Vista in English. but in poor translation Russian it is even worse. What a mess they have made of that one, and Vista won't even give you the option to change to English or any other language. Absolutelyely disgusting! Listen to your customers windows. Or will evereybody change to Mac one day? I think so! Especially the way that windows is messing around with us.

Difference is that internal version (including Vista) is quite primitive and overall slow. There is no way to tell it that system files should be put to the beginning of the disk, the fastest part of it, to guarantee short boot-up time — on the contrary, smart algorithms implemented in Disk Defrag provide smooth operation.

Yes, my final dream is to get Mac OS X, where fragmentation is not an issue ;)

Thanks. It took 7 hours and 12 minutes to defrag and optimise. Seems to work faster now.

Two other things I would do, then: run CCleaner to get rid of all temporary files, and see what occupies your disk with SequoiaView.

1. CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) tool, deletes all kinds of temporary files, like InternetExplorer is known to collect huge amount of unnecessary files, Windows updates and memory dumps, pre-installation files etc. CCleaner will save you tons of space: download (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/).

2. SequoiaView (http://w3.win.tue.nl/nl/onderzoek/onderzoek_informatica/visualization/sequoiaview/), visually shows you all files on your disk, with nice highlighting like this:

Download here (http://www.win.tue.nl/cgi-bin/usr/sequoia/counter3xp.cgi). Install and run Sequoia; it will take some minutes to analyse. To see all your files, go to the root of your disk. Press second button on the menu bar to turn coloring on... Go explore now!

Somehow University's fileserver is down. Get your copy of SequoiaView from Cnet.com, here is the link — right here :hooray:

is it necessary to defragment a NTFS drive?

FatAndy
20-05-2010, 12:42
Less necessary than FAT drive, but yes, contiguous files are being read much faster. And if defragmanter can pull OS files to outer tracks - it will speed up even more.

It is indeed absolutely vital to defragment NTFS volumes on a regular basis!

Amazing services have been offered recently, where you can find Windows driver updates

1. DeviceDoctor.com (http://www.DeviceDoctor.com), standalone utility
2. My-Config.com (http://www.My-Config.com), detects from the browser

I would like to add I use revouninstaller (freeware) to remove programs. Does a good job of really getting rid of all the little leftovers... also has the option to disable things at start up... do you really need to run the adobe acrobat speed launcher everytime you boot up for example ?!?!

best speed improvement can be achieved by UNINSTALLING Windows.

Install Ubuntu and your computer will go twice as fast on older computers, not necessary to defragment at all.

have a nice day :-)
