Hi guys,

Finally got my new Mac with all the problem baggage that comes with it for an ex-Windows user.

Here's my question: I try and play an .avi movie I downloaded but it needs a codec that I just can't find for my Mac. It won't play with quicktime and when I try and open it with DivX player, this is the error meessage it gives me "You may need an additional audio decoder to play the soundtrack of this file.

This file contains a track in the Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192") format. You may need to install a DirectShow decoder for this audio format in order to hear the soundtrack of this file."

Anyone know where to get such a codec for free?

Try downloading VLC Player. It can play pretty much anything on the Mac.
VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)

I agree on VLC, and you may also want to download Perian - Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTimeŽ components (http://perian.org/), which really is a "Swiss Army Knife" of video codecs - I find most things will play through Quicktime once you have installed it.

I would also recommend the Flip4Mac software, an official add-on developed by Microsoft for Windows Media files and streams which are based on wmv.

Hey thanks all!

I completely forgot that VLC may exist for Mac, since I was a die-hard Windows user.

Movie now plays fine. Thanks again!

Will definitely check out that Swiss Army Knife batch of codecs, since i prefer the QT interface when playing movies, rather than DivX or VLC.:piano:
