Let's have a look at the remaining rounds of qualification to the World Cup in South Africa next year 11 June - 11 July 2010. The European group consists of 53 Teams of which 13 qualify. Africa 51 Teams, 5 qualify plus South Africa host nation. South America 10 Teams, 4-5 qualify. Asia 43 Teams, 4-5 qualify. North-and Middle America 35 Teams, 3-4 qualify. Oceania 10 Teams, 0-1 Qualify. Best Oceanian team plays off versus 5th best Asian to qualify. 5th best South American plays off versus 4th best North- Middle American.

The teams already through in the Asian group are:
Australia, South Korea, North Korea and Japan. Saudi Arabia play at home against Bahrain tomorrow (result last Sat 0:0), the winner meeting New Zealand 10 Oct, 14 Nov.

Africa has 5 qualifying groups each with 2 or 3 games to play. Let's look at who still has a chance of playing in the first World Cup held in Africa. Group winners qualify.
South Africa as hosts automatically qualify. Incidentally SA lost 0:2 to Germany in a friendly on Saturday in which they failed to impress but did have some players out apparently.

Africa Group A table.
1. Gabun...played 3...won 2...drawn 0...lost 1...goals 5:3...difference 2...points 6
2. Togo...4...1...2...1...2:4...-2...5
3. Cameroon...3...1...1...1...2:1...1...4
4. Marocco...4...0...3...1...2:3...-1...3
Remaining games: 9.9 Cameroon-Gabun, 10.10 Cameroon-Togo, 10.10 Gabun-Marocco, 14.11 Togo-Gabun, 14.11 Marocco-Cameroon. My tip: Cameroon should win tomorrow and continue to lead group until end.

Africa Group B table.
1. Tunisia...4...2...2...0...6:3...3...8
2. Nigeria...4...1...3...0...5:2...3...6
3. Mozambique...4...1...1...2...2:4...-2...4
4. Kenya...4...1...0...3...3:7...-4...3
Remaining games: 10.10 Nigeria-Mozambique, 10.10 Tunisia-Kenya, 14.11 Mozambique-Tunisia, 14.11 Kenya-Nigeria. I can see either Tunisia or Nigeria advancing, probably Tunisia. Could be a real photo finish!

Africa Group C table.
1. Algeria... 4...3...1...0...6:1...5...10
2. Egypt...4...2...1...1...6:4...2...7
3. Zambia...4...1...1...2...2:4...-2...4
4. Rwanda...4...0...1...3...0:5...-5...1
Remaining games: 10.10 Algeria-Rwanda, 10.10 Zambia-Egypt, 14.11 Rwanda-Zambia, 14.11 Egypt-Algeria. Probably an Algerian group win but will only be decided in last game Egypt-Algeria. North African thriller!

Africa Group D table.
1. Ghana...4...4...0...0...7:0...7...12
2. Mali...4...1...2...1...5:5...0...5
3. Benin...4...1...1...2...3:5...-2...4
4. Sudan...4...0...1...3...1:6...-5
Remaining games: 10.10 Benin-Ghana, 10.10 Mali-Sudan, 14.11 Ghana-Mali, 14.10 Sudan-Benin. Ghana have qualified perfectly with 4 wins from 4 and no goals against. Experience and talent to match big teams.

Africa Group E table.
1. Ivory Coast...4...4...0...0...15:3...12... 12
2. Burkina Faso...4...2...0...2...7:10...-3...6
3. Guinea...4...1...0...3...6:9...-3...3
4. Malawi...4...1...0...3...3:9...-6...3
Remaining games: 10.10 Malawi-Ivory Coast, 10.10 Guinea-Burkina Faso, 14.11 Ivory Coast-Guinea, 14.11 Burkina Faso-Malawi. Can only see Ivory Coast with 4 wins from 4 and 15 goals qualifying. African force!

...to be continued with South America, North- Middle America and Europe...

Several decisive games in the South American group tonight and tomorrow will be heartbreaking for a number of teams and heads will roll as some of the usual favourites bow out. Note: no team is yet to qualify. It's still 100% open!

South American group table.

1. Brazil...played...15...won... 8...drawn...6...lost...1...goals...28:7...difference...21...points...30
2. Chile...15...8...3...4...25:16...9...27
3. Paraguay...15...8...3...4 ...21:13...8...27
4. Argentina...15...6...4...5...20:18...2...22

5. Colombia...15...5...5...5...9:11...-2...20 qualification

6. Ecuador...15...5...5...5...18:22...-4...20
7. Uruguay...15... 4...6...5...23:17...6...18
8. Venezuela...15...5...3...7...19:26...-7...18
9. Bolivia...15...3...3...9...19:31...-12...12
10. Peru...15...2...4...9...8:29...-21...10

Remaining games: 09.09 Bolivia-Ecuador, 09.09 Uruguay-Colombia, 10.09 Paraguay-Argentina, 10.09 Brazil-Chile, Venezuela-Peru, 11.10 Argentina-Peru, Bolivia-Brazil, Ecuador-Uruguay, Colombia-Chile, Venezuela-Paraguay, 14.10 Uruguay-Argentina, Brazil-Venezuela, Paraguay-Colombia, Chile-Ecuador, Peru-Bolivia. Every remaining game is important in this group, even the last game determines who is second last and last, although keep in mind that technically Bolivia on 12 points can still qualify. The first 4 teams automatically qualify. The fifth team plays off against the 4th from North- Central America.

Ok let's play a game with the South American group. Let's imagine that every remaining game is won by the home team. Then the table looks like this and these teams qualify.

Brazil 36
Paraguay 33
Chile 30
Argentina 25

Uruguay 24 qualification

Venezuela 24
Colombia 23
Ecuador 23
Bolivia 18
Peru 13

Or let's imagine the remaining 3 games have identical results as 1st round, for example Brazil beat Chile 3:0 1st round, so we now take Chile-Brazil 0:3 and the table looks like this.

Brazil 37
Paraguay 31
Chile 30
Argentina 27

Ecuador 25 qualification

Colombia 23
Uruguay 22
Bolivia 19
Venezuela 18
Peru 11

It seems likely that the present 4 teams will qualify but it is in no way certain. Qualification 5th place could be any of present place Colombia or Uruguay or Ecuador, but could in theory also be Bolivia or Venezuela.

The 9 European group winners qualify, the best 8 second placed teams play off. 13 teams from 53 starters receive World Cup tickets. So who's playing and who's watchingTV:question:

Europe group 1.

1. Denmark...played...7...won...5...drawn...2...lost...0...goals...14:3...difference...11...points...17
2. Hungary...7...4...1...2...9:4...5...13
3. Sweden...8...3...4...1...8:3...5...13
4. Portugal...7...2...4...1...9:5...4...10
5. Albania...8...1...3...4...4:8...-4...6
6. Malta...9...0...2...7...0:21...-21...2

Remaining games: 09.09 Malta-Sweden, 09.09 Albania-Denmark, 09.09 Hungary-Portugal, 10.10 Portugal-Hungary, Denmark-Sweden, 14.10 Portugal-Malta, Sweden-Albania, Denmark-Hungary

Sweden, played one more game than the others, are currently playing 0:0 against Malta in a game which could be called The Classic Revenge of the Hopeless Dwarfs. If Sweden draw this game they can almost kiss their ticket goodbye. Unbeaten Denmark are currently leading this group but any of Hungary, Sweden or Portugal could also take first or second in this interesting group with so many key matches still to play.

Europe group 2

1. Switzerland...7...5...1...1...13:6...7...16
2. Greece...7...4...1...2...12:6...6...13
3. Latvia...7...4...1...2...11:6...5...13
4. Israel...8...2...4...2...10:9...1...10
5. Luxemburg...8...1...3...4...3:13...-10...
6. Moldova...7...0...2...5...2:11...-9...2

Remaining games: 09.09 Israel-Luxemburg, Moldova-Greece, Latvia-Switzerland, 10.10 Greece-Latvia, Israel-Moldova, Luxemburg-Switzerland, 14.10 Greece-Luxemburg, Switzerland-Israel, Latvia-Moldova.

Probably Switzerland to take either first or second in the group. Probably Greece to take second as their remaining games are slightly easier than Latvia's. The head-to-head on 10.10 shall decide both teams' fate.

Europe group 3.

1. Slovakia...8...5...2...1...19:8...11...17
2. Northern Ireland...9...4...3...2...13:7...6...15
3. Poland...8...3...3...2...19:8...11...12
4. Czech Republic...8...3...3...2...15:6...9...12
5. Slovenia...8...3...3...2...10:4...6...12
6. San Marino...9...0...0...9...1:44...-43...0

Remaining games: Northern Ireland-Slovakia, Slovenia-Poland, 10.10 Czech Republic-Poland, Slovakia-Slovenia, 14.10 Czech Republic-Northern Ireland, Poland-Slovakia, San Marino-Slovenia

Tonight's games shall decide the direction and games on 10.10 and 14.10 the destinations. It's completely open in this even and well fought out group. Nice goal by San Marino against Slovakia oh-je-oh-je-oh-je!

Europe group 4.

1. Germany...8...7...1...0...24:4...20...22
2. Sbornaya...8...7...0...1...18:4...14...21
3. Finland...8...4...2...2...11:12...-1...14
4. Wales...8...3...0...5...6:10...-4...9
5. Liechtenstein...8...0...2...6...2:19...-17...2
6. Azerbaidjan...8...0...1...7...1:13...-12...1

Remaining games: 10.10 Sbornaya-Germany, Finland-Wales, Liechtenstein-Azerbaidjan, 14.10 Germany-Finland, Azerbaidjan-Sbornaya, Liechtenstein-Wales

Both Sbornaya and unbeaten Germany continued winning streaks tonight. We can say what we want about this group but nobody will know anything until after Sbornaya-Germany on 10.10. Ultimate football orgasm.

***still to come from someone else perhaps? : the remaining Euro groups and North- Middle America***

Europe group 5.

1. Spain...played...8...won...8...drawn...0...lost...0...goals...21:2...difference19...points...24
2. Bosnia-Herzegovina...8...5...1...2...21:8...13...16
3. Turkey...8...3...3...2...11:8...3...12
4. Belgium...8...2...1...5...11:18...-7...7
5. Estonia...8...1...2...5...7:22...-15...5
6. Armenia...8...1...1...6...5:18...-13...4

Remaining games: 10.10 Belgium-Turkey, Armenia-Spain, Estonia-Bosnia-Herzegovina, 14.10 Turkey-Armenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina-Spain, Estonia-Belgium

Unbeaten Spain have qualified. Bosnia Herzegovina, 4 points clear of Turkey, should progress to play-offs, with a chance of playing in their first World Cup as fair reward for a very good group phase performance.

Europe group 6.

1. England...8...8...0...0...31:5...26...24
2. Croatia...9...5...2...2...17:12...5...17
3. Ukraine...8...4...3...1...14:6...8...15
4. Belarus...8...3...1...4...15:11...4...10
5. Kazakstan...8...2...0...6...10:23...-13...6
6. Andorra...9...0...0...9...3:33...-30...0

Remaining games: 10.10 Ukraine-England, Belarus-Kazakstan, 14.10 England-Belarus, Kazakstan-Croatia, Andorra-Ukraine

Undefeated England have tickets and now choose who takes play-off place in group. If Ukraine win at home against England then they join play-off group. A Ukrainian win and 5 million Croatian hearts are broken.

Europe group 7.

1 Serbia 8 6 1 1 16:6 10 19
2 France 8 4 3 1 10:8 2 15
3 Austria 8 3 2 3 11:11 0 11
4 Lithuania 8 3 0 5 7:8 -1 9
5 Romania 8 2 3 3 9:12 -3 9
6 Faroe Islands 8 1 1 6 4:12 -8 4

Remaining games: 10.10 France-Faroe, Serbia-Romania, Austria-Lithuania, 14.10 France-Austria, Romania-Faroe, Lithuania-Serbia

The Serbs have almost certainly and deservedly qualified. 3rd placed Austria still have a word to say when they play France but it's too late as France's other game is against Faroe. Lithuania and Romania have 1% chances to get 2ndplace. Serbs to top group. Froggies to play offs. I'm sad for Romania. If they'd won their 3 drawn games they'd have gained a play off place! As for France, they deserve a thinking year at home.

Europe group 8.

1 Italy 8 6 2 0 13:3 10 20
2 Ireland 8 4 4 0 10:6 4 16
3 Bulgaria 8 2 5 1 10:7 3 11
4 Cyprus 8 1 3 4 8:12 -4 6
5 Montenegro 8 0 5 3 7:13 -6 5
6 Georgia 8 0 3 5 4:11 -7 3

Remaining games: 10.10 Ireland-Italy, Cyprus-Bulgaria, Montenegro-Georgia, 14.10 Italy-Cyprus, Bulgaria-Georgia, Ireland-Montenegro

This group is still quite open. Ireland could shake up Italy at home next match. But it'll most likely stay as it stands now, Italy automatic qualification, Ireland play off place. Bulgaria could leapfrog Paddy but won't.

Europe group 9.

1 Holland 8 8 0 0 17:2 15 24
2 Norway 8 2 4 2 9:7 2 10
3 Scotland 8 3 1 4 6:11 -5 10
4 Macedonia 8 2 1 5 5:11 -6 7
5 Iceland 8 1 2 5 7:13 -6 5

All games in this small group completed. Holland qualify. Maybe this is the group where 2nd placed team doesn't play off. That would be sad for Norway. Who knows? Maybe they get in the play offs? Wait and see.

North- and Central America group.

USA 8 14:9 16
Mexico 8 12:9 15
Costa Rica 8 10:12 15
Honduras 8 14:8 10
El Salvador 8 8:10 8
Trinidad and Tobago 8 8:16 5

Remaining games: 10.10 Costa Rica-Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras-USA, Mexico-El Salvador, 14.10 El Salvador-Honduras, Trinidad & Tobago-Mexico, USA-Costa Rica

USA, Mexico and Costa Rica should directly qualify. Honduras play in El Salvador 14.10 to decide 4th place to play off against 5th place South American, either Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, or Venezuela.

Who is your team? Have they already qualified? Are they going to qualify? Is it their first time at the World Cup? How are they going to perform at the football feast of kings? :soccer:

Hi Benedikt, I have 3 questions for you and a wish. Ok, can Austria beat the French in France? Ok that's my first question. I think the answer is a definitely maybe perhaps. Good.

But my other question is whether Faroe Islands can beat France in France. Because this would also be a prerequisite for AT to qualify. So you're right, I don't think there's going to be an Austrian team bus, sorry I mean, plane, this time around. But who knows? I hope you may one day travel back to RSA Benedikt and enjoy the changes that you see. :rasta::rasta:

What's your tip for the game Bahrain (Asian 5th place) versus New Zealand (Oceania group winner) on 10.10/14.11? It's a bad question because both teams are IMHO pretty naff.

My team - I am more of a glory hunter.
I like to follow teams where few Russians play nowadays - Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton. I don't follow Pogrebnyak's team, cause I don't speak German. Otherwise I would. In Russia I watch CSKA and Zenit in local tournament and every single Russian club in international action.

I do sail!
I do like big yachts!
I do dream of owning one one day!
Here in Moscow it is rather hard and expensive hobby.
But everytime I get to the sea in some tourist area I rent a laser type yacht for a few hours and take mywife to sail with me. I had a few funny moments in Cuba...
I just got back from Turkey, the place called Bodrum - I've never seen so many yachts as in that marine. But this time I had no time to rent any boat for sailing.

Did anybody watch yesterday game? bulls..t! The problem with Russian team is that (it's somewhere deep in minds of all Russian peope) they are not playing on the edge of their abilities constantly. It's like "if we are playing with Spain - we should do our best! If we have a match with Azerbaidjan - we can have a walk, who cares?!....." It was such a shame - to have 1:1 score! Why should I feel patriotic for THAT?:5387:

Yes Darya, I know about chakras, but not exactly in this context, haven't heard them connected with football before. Darya, let's play a game. Pick 4 of these teams U like best.

Portugal, Greece, France, Slovenia, Ireland, Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ukraine.

Yep those 4 teams sound pretty logical and probable. Need to see France and Portugal in the World Cup, although they're both perhaps not as strong as 4 years ago. I don't know about Ireland. And I hope for Russia but they must really want it and deserve it as U said. Let's wait and see the pairings on Monday. As opponents for Russia, I'd wish for Bosnia or Slovenia. I don't know if Ukraine are performing well at the moment. I don't know if Greece are strong at the moment. I'd like to see Russia, France, Portugal and Ukraine qualify.

How a Russian can support Germany is beyond my comprehension. As an Englishman I could never support Germany. It's not about 1939-45 it's about Mexico 1970 and Turin 1990.

I was so hoping that Russia got Ukraine and to see my wife presented with the great dilemna of who to support. I asked her and she gave the correct answer for a girl from Kirovograd.

How a Russian can support Germany is beyond my comprehension. As an Englishman I could never support Germany. It's not about 1939-45 it's about Mexico 1970 and Turin 1990.

It's easy! Names of this reason are Michael Ballack, René Adler and Joachim Löw.;) And there is something else, but I can't say what- I don't know. Sometimes you can't put into words words why you do like something, it's just it. And I'm not vindictive)))
World changes, and so am I:10518:

England and Germany, though both good teams, shall be beaten in the semifinals and Russia and Australia shall fight it out in the World Cup final, the latter triumphing gloriously.;)

Do you know anywhere that will be showing the Russia play-off game?I'll be at Papa's for game two, the big decider, on the big screen, but it'll be extremely crowded. Well-necessary to get there early, at least an hour early, to have any chance of a seat or a full view of the screen. But other places will have it too. This game on Wednesday 18 November is going to be the absolute mega must see football highlight of 2009.:soccer:

Buddies (http://buddiescafe.ru/) at Tverskaya 12/8 (entrance from Kozitsky Pereulok) Metro Chekovskaya will definitely have it on. But here too, best to book early to grab good seats. Enjoy the game!

Tell us when you arrive as I will be looking forward to dat you arrive in Moscow. Ok , you will be shattered first day, and it will take time for you to set up an internet connection here.

In regards to the big match? I really do hope Russia gets through, but the feeling of Russians is that they feel they have seen it too many times, and that is losing to the weak teams at the most crucial moments.

Come on Russia! Get through as England wants to play with you :)

Hey that's great Darya. Looking forward to seeing U.;)
It'll be a top evening. I just hope Russia wins. They must win. Against Slovenia. It's an important game. Big chance to get to the World Cup. My tip is Russia and Australia in the final, meaning Russia must win on Wednesday next week. Russia have strong players, Arsharvin, Pavlyuchenko, Akinfeev. Let's see them do the job Saturday and Wednesday!

What time for Russia tonight?

Forget what I said now , due to a search. So I take it England has now the possibility of facing teams with a vengence. France, Portugal and Russia:) And of course the one who keep beating England on penalties. I can only hope England avoids penelties as they always lose. I really do hope the have been practicing in this area, especially our back line. And if they do, they might just grasp the word cup final. So far England is undefeated. But I know that this time they don't feel so complacent. They have learnt that anything can happen, and have been known to be defeated by a team they look down on, a bit like Russia.

1-0 to Slovenia....2-2 on aggregate. Away goals rule means that Slo go through.

Pity. Would have loved the opportunity for England to meet Russia in the finals.

Better luck next time Russia. You were unlucky.

E-eh,seems we are not feeding our players well they are so small and couldnt beat tall Slovenians. They all about 1.90 and with white uniform they was looking really bigger.Russians wasnt bad at all, specially for the last 4 min.:).Pity.
It was really strange situation for me with the gole.Akinfeev even didnt try to do anything. What a hell

Russia unlucky? You sure? I just thought Slovenia played better than Russia on the night. And, given that FIFA had already seeded (ie rigged) the draw in Russia's (and others') favour I don't know if I'd buy into 'luck' this time.

Bels was talking about another team, but 'beaten by a team they look down on' could sum up the evening.
