Woman's summer if only "woman" in the meaning of a peasant woman.

It came from the Old Rus when people believed that women could return seasons and influence weather. It was a good time... :)

Was it related to women's hair blowing in the wind (not wearing a scarf?) or tying knots? This was an old Celtic belief.

Don't think so, in Russia women traditionally covered hair (married women).

You are welcome Zyablik :)

To be honest, it's only one of the versions. Another one (and so to say a more official one) that woman's summer (бабье лето) starts when the harvesting is over and women have the last opportunity to enjoy the sun - since it's the last sunny days before winter.

And thanks, I like the avatar also. :agree:

So did Celtic women, but witches were said to cause storms at sea by removing their scarves and letting their hair blow in the wind.

Also, the Church's insistence on women covering their hair was partly to counteract their sorcery.....

I'm off fishing again this weekend,i'll spend more hours this time, even take my boat so I can catch the big fish in the middle of the lake.
It's my dream to catch a decent size fish in Russia, something that I can be proud of,so far no luck.

I believe an Indian Summer in English just means a very hot summer, as happens in India itself - the Russian phrase relates more to the end of the summer, no?

No. Indian Summer is the period of time in the autumn when the weather resembles summer. Usually after the first frost or the equinox. At least in the US.

Seems in Russia they were more liberal to witches :) Though witches here didnt cause storms but used their power mostly in positive way, they healed and also charmed and bewitched, and were respected. And they did it with their hair covered may be thats why the church pretend to not notice them.

Viola
06-09-2009, 22:41
I found a translation in this blog (http://french-kisses.blogspot.com/2008/11/sweet-candies-of-past.html)

This the most famous song of Renaud (the tenderhearted rebel of French music) about himself telling his childhood to his daughter. The title of the song refers to a candy popular in the 70s, which could be "winning" (you got a new one for free). The rapper Booba sampled the song on his hit Pitbull.

Lyrics of Mistral Gagnant

To seat on a bench for 5 minutes with you
Looking at the people as long as there are some
To tell you the good times which are dead or will be
Shaking in my hand your lil fingers
Then to feed silly pigeons
And to kick them for fake
And hear your laugh which cracks the wall
And can cure my injuries
To tell you a little how I was when I was a kid
The wonderful candies we used to rob at the shopkeeper
Car-en-sac and Minto, one franc fudge
And the winning mistral

To walk under the rain, for 5 minutes with you
And looking at the life as long as there's still some
To tell you the Earth, while eating you with my eyes
To tell you a little about your mom
And jump in the puddles to make her moans
To smash up our shoes and laugh
And to hear your laugh like some hears the sea
To stop and go back backward
Most of all, to tell you, the old carambars and the coco bohmes
And the real roudoudous which cut our lips
And ruined our teeths
And the winning mistrals

To seat on a bench for 5 minutes with you
And looking at the sun fading away
To tell you about the good old days which are dead and I dont care
To tell you that the bad guys are not us
That if I am nuts, its only of your eyes
Which have the advantage to be two
And to hear your laugh, flying off as high
As the calls of the birds fly off
To tell you at last that youve got to love life
And love it even Time is a murderer
And to take with it the laughs of children
And the winning mistrals
And the winning mistrals

PS:A Mistral Gagnant was a kind of candy. Some of them were "winning" (gagnant) and you could get another one for free.

Bonifaciy, I am not very good in Russian movies but I'm pretty sure that English version comes first. It's from George Gershwin's 1935 opera 'Porgy and Bess'. They say that Gershwin had based this song on a Ukrainian lullaby, Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon (A Dream Passes By The Windows), which he heard in a New York City performance by Oleksander Koshetzs Ukrainian National Chorus. Let's hope for nice crisp snow, blew sky, and calm winds. I generally love this kind of weather. In fact if you are well clothed it can be enjoyable, especially in the western region of Moscow where I live. And I am without this damn flu of course. Moscow centre can be rather slushy and dirty in snow weather of course. But the regions can be very pleasant and enjoyable in Winter. But who knows, as my best winter was my first year five years ago. As nice as I would imagine Switzerland to be. smaller hills of course :)

how did I manage to add all this videos without knowing the technology you described above? - very probably forum engine has some default settings how it should to workaround URLs posted. And at most cases it performs task successfully. But at some cases (for example, long string or string with Unicoded characters or smth non-standard symbol in address) manual insertion with that button would be better.

FatAndy

Another reason could be - forum engine is subject to upgrade and improve continuously.
Probably some time ago it was unable to workaround links by default, only via that button...
But later this default feature was incorporated, and button... was just forgotten to remove. ;)

It's cold today and I have still got flu. Thank goodness they have put the heating on here. Now that is good news. Russia is warm indoors even when we get the 20- degrees coming here eventually.

But I do enjoy the oblast in Russia when it snows, as long as you are well clothed with your long johns on, and you are healthy with no flu it's terrific :) Often although low temprature, the wind is calm, you might see blue sky and sun, watch the skiers, the snowmakers, the sliders and even a walk in the forest is terrific if you are lucky enough to live just outside Moscow, it might feel like a flat Switzerland. And hey! We do have little hills in Rublevka. It can be a very beautiful place if you are lucky enough to live here.

I'm afraid we'll not have much of sun and blue sky until end January, the following weeks when days are getting shorter and we don't have enough sunshine are the most difficult for me to survive. You are lucky to live outside of Moscow, the weather is always better and sunnier in the country.

ciao Viola,

to answer your question, no, I'm not an architect, but I'm a "fan" of architecture, I'm very passionate to this subject, and to painting and sculpture too.
Sincerely I'm still looking for a job here, maybe just a part time one, I offered myself as guide for tourists, cause anyway I know the city well, but no answers.
If you had any hint of a possible chance in that direction I'd much appreciate it.

Hi Gropius, I think that arts scene is rather competitive. I have some friends who are artists and not many of them flourish financially. Those who prefer doing what they have a calling to and not follow the market trends usually have some side works. I also have a friend who is very well positioned in the design field and he started a new project recently, btw they have a lot of contacts with Italy because Italians are famous for their design. PM me if you are interested and maybe we'll find a way to introduce you to some people.

Does it mean that if someone consider him/herself 'sensible' and is insolent enough then he/she could do anything  sounds true lol. But what if others don't think that you are sensible? Then silly things will still look silly to them... and make you look even more silly :jester:.

I love Paolo Conte songs, it's a pity that abroad they can't appreciate much their wonderful lyrics cause they're in italian only, but music also it's very good, don't you think?

this song is known by many, expecially in Russia as an Adriano Celentano's song, but it's originally a Paolo Conte's song and lyrics.

I like this song, I know it from the German movie Bella Martha, a wonderful film, I love movies about food and cooking and it's also a great romance movie.

Azzurro is a great song as well, reminds me of summer, sun and sea :sunny:

:celebrate: Congratulations!!! :celebrate:

Viola, you are so bright and optimistic and I wish you to remain the same and that nothing in your life would upset you ever.

You are welcome Viola. I am glad that you liked this song. And me, I think this sad song is my favorite at the moment because it reminds me of my inevitable departure which must happen in winter, when the snow will be falling down and another man will be singing to me: "Tu ne viendras pas ce soir, me crie mon dsespoir..."("You will not come tonight, my despair cries to me..."), and crying, just like Salvatore Adamo in this song... ;)

Pete, it's strange, I thought you know that I'm going to Canada. :) And I can't delay it because I can't wait anymore! :mml:

But don't worry, it will not be this year for sure, so we'll have time to meet when you are in Moscow. :beerbros:

At least we'll still have a bit of time Olga,
but I'm still not happy U're leaving. But on the positive side, I really know it's what U want, yes I heard U mention it, but no concrete plans. Hooooo I know how much U must be looking forward to a new change of scene, change of culture, new people. It's Montreal U were talking about, wasn't it? Oh U'll really love it and a move'll give U alot of energy!:hooray:

Hahaha, I 100% agree with him. Yes, he sings that everything annoys him - but those are really annoying things. Well, here is the translation made by Google:

I go to drink a glass Costes
But the waitress I pump air
I have no reservation
I go out I look like an idiot
It annoys me, yes it annoys me
I have a gift to
Home Zadig & Voltaire
The pull which is labeled "Rock '
But there's the out of stock

Ca m'neeeeerve
All those who wear the fringe to Kate Moss
Ca m'neeeeerve
The lipstick is over now that the gloss
Ca m'neeeeerve
All those returning to skinny jeans in size 34
Ca m'neeeeerve
The only view of the string gives you the urge to kill
Scheie!

In front of the VIP club there's lots of Lamborghini
I arrive on my vespa was told not you go
But it irritates me
I went into Weston a blonde on the phone
Said: "Can I help you? "
No I have not rung
It irritates me, my God she annoys me
I drank mojitos at the Billionaire
In the square while I vomited on the floor
I lost my ticket for the cloakroom
I find no taxi, ach is war!

Ca m'neeeeerve
All those who wear the fringe to Kate Moss
Ca m'neeeeerve
The lipstick is over now that the gloss
Ca m'neeeeerve
All those who drink champagne pink
Ca m'neeeeerve
To forget that Jimmy chooo you got sore feet
It annoys me all these people are queuing at Ladure
All for macaroons
Anyway ...
It seems they are good

Ca m'neeeeerve
All those who dance on the dancefloor like princesses
Ca m'neeeeerve
All those like you who listen to much music too loud
Ca m'neeeeerve
I see them up and I say this with their jack: "It annoys me"

All those who dance on the dancefloor like princesses
Ca m'neeeeerve
If you got the black card
eh bah you'll see their buttocks
Ca m'neeeeerve
All those like you who listen to much music too loud
Ca m'neeeeerve
I see them up and I say this with their jack: "It annoys me"

There is even one word in German. I guess it's something rude. ;)
