Tommy C hi,

Welcome to Russia, Nizhny is a great city!

There are many great bars, restaurants and like places.

A nice place thats not expensive is, Kabanchik.

Details,
Prostpect Lenina, dom 32. "пр-т. Ленина, д. 32"
Web: *есторан Нижний Новгород (http://kabanchik.nnov.ru/)

Another is,
Priyout ustalogo traktorista "Приют усталого тракториста"
Address: Bolshaya. Pokrovskaya, 14.
Web: :: (http://www.traktorist-nn.ru/)

There is the Tinkoff Beer Restaurant
Address: Ulitsa Belinskogo, dom 63, 5th floor "ул. Белинского, д. 63 (ТЦ Этажи, эт. 5)"
They have Euorpean and Japanese food if you get hungry :)

If you like good music while you drink, there is a really cool rock bar -
Rock-Bar
Address: Ulitsa Piskunova, dom 11 "ул. Пискунова, д. 11"
Mind that this is not a great place for a quiet chat :) it's very loud and full
of people. They serv sushi pretty cheap if you're into that. Though the
service may be quite slow because of so many people. But still a great place!

There used to be many cool places but it seems the Crisis has hit the Nizhny
bars hard. Beerka, Perushka both seem to be closed.

I'm sure you will find some great places anyways, Nizhny is cool city with a
lot to offer everyone. Enjoy your time there.

Cheers, RydeR!
These places sound great. I'll check them out. I'm leaving for Moscow on Friday and I'm in Nizhny from the 21st to the 25th of August. If anyone fancies meeting up for a beer, let me know!

Helo Tommy c Is this simply a tourist visit? or do you you have a professional reason go here. Are you going to teach? or something else? Is this a tourist idea? Or are you looking for more?

Hi Bels,
Yeah, I'm just touring Russia and Ukraine for a couple of weeks. I'm only in Nizhny for four nights. Planning to go to Gorodets.
Cheers

Four nights? More than enough, imho. Good luck!

2 Tommy C:

My five copecks aout NNov nice places - generally the city is much better in food quality/qty than Moscow and even SPb.

First in list is cafe called "Angliyskoe posol'stvo" (English embassy) - it is at center, near Ploschad' Gor'kogo, just behind Dom Svyazi (Telecom House), at Zvezdinka street. Very good kitchen, tested, my recommendations.

Second place is at central pedestrian Bolshaya Pokrovskaya (just Pokrovka) street, opposite the Oktyabr' (October) cinema - there is a bookstore and 3th floor over it is occupied with Italian style cafe - very good kitchen and very democratic pricing (although not visited personally, but recommended by reliable local people).

Third place (also recommended by local people who like to eat really big and tasty portions) - opposite the Comedy Theatre at the corner of Alekseevskaya and Gruzinka streets (at center too, Alekseevskaya is parallel to Pokrovka, Gruzinka crosses them perpendicular) there is a restaurant in theater style - name is either Stary Teatr (Old Theatrr) or Gorodskoy Teatr (City Theatre). Even salad portion is causing respect... ;)

Ha Ha! Even the salad portion! I like it. I've marked these places on my map and I'm looking forward to trying some of them out - many thanks for your recommendations!

With a pleasure - really nice city... and not a bad bar at Strigino airport sterile zone, just before boarding... No bars before check-in though... but there is one-floor "shalman" at airport square, right from exit doors... convenient if your flight is delayed :D

BTW... Do you go to this trip with a girl or alone?

Tommy C

Yeah, I'm on my own for this leg of the tour so your recommendations are especially welcome!

He-he... Take a basin or basket for saliva when crawling along streets between local girls;) - especially for Nizhny and Kiev (if you plan Kiev at Ukraine).

Any thoughts on a good value place to stay? I see the usual range of Soviet monoliths online and wondered if anyone could recommend better.

Thanks!

Hi namesake, tell me your budget for accomodation.

Hi,

Ideally I'd be looking around the 2,000r / night mark. It's only the one night and I'm travelling solo so it doesn't need to be flashy. But after seeing quotes of around 5,000r I got a bit worried ...

FatAndy
09-11-2009, 16:38
Well... 2K is only Soviet monoliths
. - . :: (http://www.hotel-central.ru/) - they start at 1700 but more typical is 3K

Oktyabrskaya starts at 4K
:: (http://www.oktyabrskaya.ru/rooms)

(http://rest-home.nnov.ru/1rooms.html) - 3K again
I've stayed at Centralnaya and Oktyabrskaya during business visits - both are not bad, but Oktyabrskaya stays closer to river, has better food, free WiFi (although it is divided by 1h quantums and you'll need to request long paper band with logins\passwords) and good massage room.

I feared it might end up like that. Oh well ...

Well so well... I share what I know - maybe smbd knows better...
