yahoo fooled me at first...the 'current temp' when i logged on this morning read +20C!!!

Of course, now it registers at -18C...:(

What the hell is it going to be at New Year's....? -40C again?!

-40C at NY night... I don't think so. Last year it was around -10C in Moscow.... I was at St.Pete on 31st of Dec - it was -5C.

Last year was warm and slushy and grey and disgusting - this is much better!

Russian dilemma..sunny and beautiful in winter = FREEZING cold....grey and nasty....temp not so bad.

I prefer the bright and cold over the warmer grey slush option

I went to a party that evening/night at a friend's flat and when we left at about 4 am, we had to walk for about 15 minutes before we reached a road with any cars on it so we could hail a taxi to get home...when we got home, I was literally tingling/burning for an hour after stepping inside...

My worst winter experience here was last year though when I was up at the top of the grey line looking for a gym I was thinking of joining at the time. It was dark, snowing, freezing (about -20 if I remember) and I'd forgotten my hat and my gloves. Anyway, I couldn't find the gym and being rather persistant, kept walking up and down this road trying to locate the place. The wind was being funnelled down this road like a wind tunnel and the snow was being driven right at me...after about 30 minutes (interspersed with a couple of short bus rides) I was lost, and so cold and tired that I really was considering sitting down by the side of the road and dying...in retrospect, I suppose I was on the brink of hypothermia (had stopped shaking, couldn't really think straight etc).

NEVER AGAIN! (But a mug of tea, a hot bath and bed when I finally got home have neever felt so good!!)

-16 this morning at Sheremetevo, but surprisingly didn't feel that bad. I think wind is a big factor here. Wind makes it horrible, no wind, on the contrary, is fine at even -20

Winters are cool here anyway - especially in the forest outside Moscow - 2 meters snow banks are super!!!! I like it!!!
Few years ago in March my friends and I went to our friend's dacha. We didn't take cars because it's impossible to drive there in winter. It took us about 2 hours to walk from elektrichka to dacha thru the forest coz we began to swim in snow banks, had a picnic at 50 cm width path (few cms apart and you're in 2 meters snow banks), made photos and didn't want to go to dacha despite -20C temperature outside. It was cool. We were drunk, wet BUT very happy:)

Maine, are you mad?! Have you lost your mind? -20C is horrid, regardless of wind or no wind!!! At least for those of us who are not Russian by birth!!!

DPG -- I'm with ya, mate...After the vok'zal experience, I decided not to venture out until the temps went up a bit. We had friends over that night for NYE...thankfully...Of course, they were then the ones to suffer. One of my friends forgot her hat that night, and borrowed one of mine to get home in...Of course, she was completely pi**ed by the time she left here, so she didn't feel much at all...And even said that it wasn't as cold when she left as when she'd arrived...:-)

veejay, remember, I'm from Maine. How about -40F with wind chill and riding down a mounting at 30 mph? That's really cold. -16 and no wind in Moscow are peanuts :)

I do not even feel that it is -16C. It is strange to me...

Maine -- I remember where you are from...But still...anything colder than -15C wind or not, and I'm freezing...!!!

Remember where I was born?! I blame it on my ancestors...:-)

I was born in the southern city of Rostov on Don, the place of carnivals, salsa, evelasting sunshine, pivo and raki, palm trees, beatiful creola women, bikinis, tropical weather all year round... Well you get the pic :) (What am I smoking today, I want some of that!)

Maine, I haven't seen palm trees in Rostov... Are you joking? :)

Spring and fall in Moscow are cold, wet, gloomy and grey.

Admittedly I've not had to spend a lifetime of winters here, but I find that winter casts a most charming patina on Russia. It is much more appealing than the dreary drizzling rain. There is something right about Russia in the winter.

Yes NY 02-03 indeed sucked. Our Champange froze as we stood on Red Square. Last yr, it was nice and warm:)I just reminded myself it could be worse.....I froze a brain cell or 2 during my 7 yrs in Fairbanks ,Alaska. -55 is the coldest I believe I saw. Toss water into the air and it freezes! I'm not sure at what temp Hell freezes, but I'm sure that was close:D
