Been here for a week and aware that the costs are mounting on my UK mobile. What are the best ways of getting a mobile and/or Sim card in Moscow?

It's very easy - go to kiosk near metro or to mobile shop and buy sim-card or phone+sim-card. Shop needs passport for sim, kiosk usually is being satisfied by voice dictated data.
Another way - go to mobile operator office where you can do the same plus select an easy-to-remember mobile number (if you need such).

Cheers mate, and probably best to take a Russian friend maybe? Mainly as my Russian is a bit ropey so far.

Cheers for that, I got one today from an MTS store, and as you suggested they game me a great number that is easy to remember.

To make further economy I recommend you to return to that shop and ask them to switch off all unneccessary services. For example, playing music instead of calling tone when somebody calls you, or special tariffs for regions out of your domestic (Moscow + Moscow region) if you don't plan to travel over Russia frequently, or "special rate" for every even/odd minute etc. They write off several roubles per day for such "leak services".

probably best to take a Russian friend maybe? Mainly as my Russian is a bit ropey so far - people in Moscow (and some other regions too) are well motivated usually and try to understand and satisfy your needs (for money, of course). So I think they will try to understand you even if you speak only zulu mumbo-yumbo dialect. If the task is simple do it yourself to improve language level and reaction for surronding situation. For more complicated cases Russian-speaking friend/colleague/girlfriend/wife is better of course.
