A group of us were in Doug and Marty's Saturday night, and around 3 AM some were ready to go and I stayed behind with a neophyte expat whom I was supposed to watch over so he'd get home safely. *Sigh*

Well the girls had been hitting him hard all night and we'd kept running them off. I think he liked the attention. So about an hour later I began searching for my charge to be sure he was all right--and I couldn't find him anywhere. Uh-oh. Right then I knew he'd been picked off like a weak gazelle running behind the herd. One of the girls had gotten him.

Today we find out what happened: Sure enough, he'd been hooked. His damsel had hailed them a gypsy cab outside and before they'd gotten very far the car was pulled over by law enforcement (he doesn't know which kind), and they were document checked. The officer disapproved of his documents and some disagreement ensued, and when it was all over the officer had relieved Mr. Expat of all of his money and let them go. The car then delivered him home.

So my question is: Is this a hooker in cahoots with cabbies and militsia, and the whole scheme is a pickpocket con--or was it just coincidence? Have ya'll heard of this before?

Scam though the girl isn't involved per se ......they wait and watch for expats to leave with a girl ...if the expat looks a little wobbly on his feet even better sport to be had !!

Odd though as I thought this game would have stopped with the "new" security that now lurks by the door and wanders around the place !

All his money? How much? If they cleaned him out, that would be unusual.

People get scared. Newbies don't understand that prostitution isn't as illegal as being a crooked cop, and that if you just wait it out, you can get away (get off?) with a light warning. Newbies stride the streets in their North Face jackets and PWC-branded laptop bags and expect to look Russian because they bought a big fuzzy hat at Vernisaj.

Down to the last kopeck.

I just don't know if this is some kind of common conspiracy amongst the women/cabbies/cops or if the 'document check' was just a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As said above - definitely an "in cahoots" scam...

Also the "taxis" (gypsy cabs) that wait directly outside the BH are known to be dangerous and in cahoots with just about everyone who stands to make a quick buck: the girls, the cops, the crap doorstaff etc etc

Thanks for asking a question i would have asked.

Nothing annoys me more in this country than a dopey copper trying to get a few quid out of you because your documents are apparently out of order, yeah f*****g right! ;)

As for all your money, pahhleaseeeee!

even IF questioned.

'This girl is a hooker!?' take me back to the bar i want to speak to the owner i didn't know prostitutes worked there?, she told me she was a student.

You can say whatever crap you want.

I agree with you.

If someone is enough of an idiot to ask "so, my documents are apparently not in order, what's the fine?" and then accepts "that will be everything in your wallet and your mobile phone chucked in as well" as the answer, I have no sympathy for them because it's clear that their idiocy knows no bounds...

Whatever happened to a call to the Embassy/one's company/mates who have been here longer and know the ropes/etc to sort out these problems??

As for the hooker, well assuming the guy didn't speak Russian if he'd just arrived, he must have been well pleased at her probably translating for the copper!! lol!

Like I said, I was supposed to be watching out for him so he wouldn't get into trouble...oi.

That's why he let the girl get the cab. He doesn't speak Russian. Still I thought the whole getting stopped thing was weird. I mean, does the cabbie notify the cops they've caught a big one and the cop should scurry to the scene? What have they got 2 way radios set up or something?

I'd ask your friend if the ho was "nervous" or appeared to be calm when the menty pulled them over and started fleecing them. If she was calm she was more than likely in cahoots with them. Most of those girls are not registered in Moscow and absolutely freak when the cops come into the BH or stop them on the street. For them it means servicing a few of the ments and/or a trip back from whence they came. Maybe he should point her out to Doug next time he's there....

OK this is one of the better ones, but people who come here are from places like London, LA, NY etc, where if this situation were repeated they would never give away their stuff...why do people lose common sense when they come here??

Nice generalizations, guys. I'm especially surprised by you, Koba, you're usually a bit more objective than that. Step out of your "I speak Russian and have lived here forever" box of experience and into the shoes of somebody who just hit town for the first time.

I'm not so sure it's a loss of common sense as much as the knowledge that they have no recourse against corrupt cops. I've been pulled over tons of times in the US for speeding, quite a few times for driving a motorcycle without a license, was rousted three times for fighting, and once for having an open container of alcohol in public. Not once did I ever fear for my life, in fact never felt the least bit threatened or intimidated. Not because I'm a badass or anything, but because each and every one of the cops involved conducted themselves courteously and professionally. Had any of them gone astray in any fashion, I would have had direct and immediate recourse by reporting them and/or the incident to their respective precincts' Internal Affairs Division, which would honestly and forthrightly investigate.

I'm not saying corruption doesn't exist in the US, I'm sure it does, but contrast what I said above with even the average traffic stop or document check here in Moscow. If a cop here decides he wants money and you decide to be a badass and not give it to him, nothing but NOTHING will stop him and his partner from dragging you around the corner for some creative wall counseling. Worse, just try reporting them to the "authorities" later...at best, you'll be laughed at and tossed out on your ass. More likely, in my opinion, is you'll be marked for a bit of follow-up counseling.

I'm sure exceptions abound here, but that's exactly what they are - rare exceptions. The fact is that the intimidation factor here is high enough for a newbie to feel like giving up all the money in his pocket was a low price to pay for waking up with an intact jaw the next morning.

I'd buy all of this "cut the newbie some slack" bit IF he had been there on his own without any escort.. Something tells me that Pengwyn et. al. warned him about 100 times about the problems one can have in and around Moscow. Regardless, it's a lesson he's learned and will never forget! Hope it doesn't discourage him from having fun.

doubt it was a scam, well not all completely.

you mention it happened at around 3-4am. Cops are on high alert, looking for options naturally.

now the hooker and the driver and the cops< I somehow doubt it.

the cops might have been waiting by the boar house, waiting for a drunk bait.

then once they drive off, the cops nail him, just in case.

on another note, I was listening to some old steven martin stints, back in his glory days of live comedy routines, where he says, if you ever get mugged, or someone is trying to steal your money, just throw up on the cash...

now, never give in, never even come up with all the cash, you still have an option to talk with the cops, and NEVER SHOW that you are scared or are worried.

Naturally visitors don't know this, and oh well, someone ends up as a bait...

Guys it is a definite scam and the girls involved are new faces or faces that drop in once in a while but not enough to be remembered. I agree that it is not always the case but the taxi driver is a most definite. Certain taxis are in on it (not all), usually the guys right out front know the difference but take care of their better clients. If you have had to much and try to save a buck by walking past their little team or go across the street you screwed. If you are going to play this game then back up your bets by asking some of the other expats or one of the employees if they know the lady. Ask to see her documents for safety sake and to make sure that they are of age, if she says no then move on.

The problem with the cops is there is always at least two of them but the most common is the four man team with car number 018. If she is not yours let them have her, it is a risk of the business and they have no right to detain you and they will just send her back in to try again. Ask the cop for his ID, write down the plate number, at that point they will back off unless you are totally out of it then who to blame (speaking from experience). If you are with your wife or girl friend and everything is ok, do not seperate from her because they love the chance to get her away from you and things can get out of hand.

The security inside gets their 600 ruble cut whether or not anyone admits to knowing that or not, but it is in their best interest to know the girls inside.

Best bet, go to one of the places that offer in house services. You get what you were after and go home.

I couldn't agree with you more sfjohns! I know a lot of Russians who got fleeced just because they were drunk, not even disorderly. Cops here can spot non residents, foreigners or adies of the night pretty well, the young man could have been a scam victim although I imagine that his situation was written all over him ..... Generally, resiting is pointless unless you're in a strong position (daylight, lots of people around, sober, docs in order, young inexperienced cop, good command of Russian). This young man fulfilled none of the above conditions, his mistake was to keep all of his money in one place, I'd say....

DPG
17-11-2004, 16:08
I find that the best way is actually to pretend you don't understand or speak a word of Russian - they soon give up because you waste their valuable money-fleecing time when they can't get their message across...
