Why "capitalism"? Why "America"?

Displaying evergreens around midwinter is an old pagan custom dating back at least to the ancient Germanic tribes of 2000 years ago.

The modern Christmas tree was brought from Germany to the English-speaking world in 1842 by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband.

Even in Soviet times, "yolki" were evident here everywhere from mid-December until after January 1.

This is one thing you can't get away from, certainly not in the developed world (and even in large parts of the developing world)....

Back in the US, Christmas is sooo commercialized. Next day after Thanksgiving the annoying craze begins and stays all the way right through Christmas. I'm glad I'm not in the US for this season :)

Same with me. I am actually rather angry at how the christians took a perfectly good pagan festival and stole it. I mean get your own you unoriginal charletons.

Commercial? Who the f**k cares, next people will be complaining that tourist agencies have completely commercialised travel! What's so sacred about christmas anway?

It's strange how people who weren't living in the Soviet Union keep talking about capitalism which is now a word with only a historical significance.

Ceremony and ritual spring from our heart of hearts : those who govern us know it well, for they would sooner deny us bread than dare alter the observance of tradition.

I wonder about christmas all the time. I miss the warm feeling I get from the christmas spirit. I miss cookies and milk. I like to watch football at my mothers house with my dad. god It is sad that I won't be home for christmas

1. i know the full story behind the tree very well trek dude...

2. my point was that it isn't even Halloween and like in America Christmas is thrust upon us before even the first flakes of snow fall.

3. for about two more days SFJ just two more days, unless you do not put these newbies in their places and they keep pissing me off...

X-mas is a perfect thing for me to focus on. Save money, take Ninette home to see the undiluted WEST!

I don't care about Christmas trees; they grew wild in my yard year round. The rest is no different than the weekends in the summer when the car dealerships went nuts and took over all the flat spots big enough to park a vehicle on.

When I walk around Moscow at night, the neon on the boulevards is enough to make me think itís some sort of holiday at all times. Acid flashbacks! Then I hit the greenways walking home and excuse myself as I step around some Grandmother with her dress around her hips taking a piss on the wrought iron fence outside my building while the Armenian kids throw cigarette butts at her.

Come on visa approval, come on!!!

Ignorance is never out of style. It was in fashion yesterday, it is the rage today and it will set the pace tomorrow.

Ignorance is a voluntary misfortune.

Democracy. In which you say what you like and do what you are told.

Democracy means the opportunity to be everyone's slave.

In a democracy everyone has a right to be represented, even the jerks.

guys, how can i make this more clear...
let me break it down barney style...

End of December=Christmas
Mid/end of Oct=way too early for me to want to think about Christmas

not a semantic debate about communism, capitalism, anything other than i am not ready to think about Christmas...ESP. when they celebrate new years and not western christmas so there is even longer to go!

ps SFJ- full moon gone, PMS gone...

Baby, sweetie-pie, nobody said anything about democracy. When Putin eliminates democracy, I hope the first thing he does is track down the IPs of people who use too many exclamation points and cut their fingers off.

According to the dictionary, ignorance is the lack of knowledge or willful refusal to accept it. If you deconstruct the use of the word ignorance, it implies that everyone can escape stupidity through education. Unfortunately, not everyone has the capacity for reason or critical thinking. Think of all of the earnest young vegetarian women that love puppies and study really hard but drop out of veterinary school.

People think I'm strange, but I really insist to celebrate just one holiday at a time. October = Halloween. November = Thanksgiving. December = Christmas, etc. My family thinks I'm the grinch, but I refuse to put on Christmas music before Thanksgiving.

Returned from Singapore a couple weeks ago (note: mid October) and Christmas decorations were already everywhere! And this isn't even a Christian country. COMMERCIALISM on the march... Blech....
