Indeed I brought some salo with me. Like 2 kilos. Gone with the wind, sorry. As soon as I brought it to our office, people lined up. Best of Ukranian salo, with quite a bit of meat, slighly salted and smoked

yaaaam

I CANNOT TELL THE UKRANIAN SALO IS THE BEST. BELARUSIAN IS DELICIOUS. NO SAUSAGE CAN COMPARE TO IT.

23-10-2004, 18:57
The thought of it is enough to put me off it (and coming from some who has no problems with oysters, fois gras, veal, steak tartare etc, that's saying something!) - I won't even talk about the taste...

trebor

Salo is fat. Fat is poison. Raises your cholesterol to the stratasphere, cloggs the arteries, megga calories per gram and the Ukrainians still claim it to be some kind of wonder food.
I've even heard them say its GOOD for the heart!
Oh yeah, and i nearly forgot............................tastes like sh*t too!

Trebor, in you I have found a soulmate!!

Not only do you hate Salo and realise it's bad for people, but you are also a Hammers man!!

trebor
24-10-2004, 03:39
Yes DPG,
i'm a hammers fan but the hammers like salo can also be bad for you health. My stress levels are way up this season!

DPG

You're telling me!!

I've always thought that the Hammers would be well suited to life in Russia - this si afterall a country of extremes, and the Hammers are an ''all or nothing'' kind of bunch!

Knowing that Salo is bad for you and all, but guessing that is no worse than the vodka that I learned to eat it with, I have to say it is great. I bit of Salo, pickled garlic, and some vodka. Ah the joys and memories of that extremely long (well in terms of amount of hours actually spent semi-awake anyhow) visit to Odessa.

Wouldn't eat it often, but sometimes.........

Maine Surfer

Odessa, salo and vodka! cannot beat that

I used to eat it when I drank vodka, but zavyazal s etou huinyoi, so don't eat it anymore. My visitor from Kanyev, Ukraine, promptly filled my refrigorator with the shit upon entering my residence.

ha-ha) Fa-Q, don't let salo spoil the taste of vodka)
As for me, I find it amazing when properly made. And the best salo is not what you see on the markets but what your friends bring from Ukraine and Belorussia. They know there how to make it best, believe me)

Considering a SMALL portion of salo to be 50 grams and the daily recommended average of calories for a male to be 2000

50x9=450

1 (SMALL!)portion of salo = around 25% of your daily intake of calories!

That's mega calories

Even the word "salo" itself arouses the feeling of disgust in me :ignore: :ignore: :ignore:

I tried salo once by mistake - it was on a buffet table. Cannot understand how people eat it - it is basically cooking fat of a type that was used many years ago, before people became health conscious :(.

i had four rashes of australian bacon - about two foot long apiece - and three free range eggs this morning and the entire neighbourhood - a good few square kilometres - smelt of ned's bacon and eggs. it was a sensation.

the only thing missing was a post breakfast cigarette. damn i miss that!

That is best left for the varieties of pig which I listed in my earlier post in this thread ;)!

and EIGHT FEET of bacon? What is the width of each piece - or is the exchange rate of an Oz foot to a UK foot similar to that between an Oz dollar and a pound sterling? ;) ;) ;)?

26-10-2004, 17:50
As I have said earlier I like salo.... with Borodinsky bread and Soleniye ogurci (brined cucumbers). But I eat salo once in 2-3 months... Not a fan :o

I was in Ukraine twice this year and learned to consume it without any notable damage. My friend ordered "salo v shokolade" in a fine restaurant in Simferopol. It turned out to be chocolate salo rolls :D :agree:
