Would anyone mind taking the time to answer these questions on life in Moscow for us new people moving to or who have just moved to Moscow. Add your own commnets if you want to. This poll is only for fun. Sorry if any questions are a bit stupid or if I missed any better questions. I'm new to polls. I like Russian cooking, caviar, wine, culture and other things. I don't have experience of other sides of Moscow life.

Thanks.

I have NEVER had problems at Customs. Even when we came in with our cat.

Sometimes the lines at Immigration can be V E R Y long.

If anyone knows anyone who has a flat to let thats not a crazy price with 2 bedrooms for sleeping, please let me know. I'll be in Russia for up to 5 years so I can offer long term payment to any landlord that I trust and like.

I won't post what I'm looking for here but will PM you if you me PM with my requirements.

I will publically say I'm a bit afraid of finding a flat and an owner that I can trust as I have a family to think about and so have to be sure and careful. If I was on my own I would just rent a tiny studio or share but I'm not on so need a larger, good and clean flat in the centre or near the centre. I appologize if I seem negatve or over worried. I'm just nervouse !

Its a journey into the unknown which is never pleasant till you are settled and know a place where ever it maybe in the world. Any contacts welcome and very much appreciated. Thank you.

Marmite, it might be easier for you and your family if you arrive in Moscow first, find an apartment and get familiar with your environs and then have your family come--if possible. Give yourself a month to orient yourself and then, when your family follows, you'll have some of the basics down. (Or maybe I totally missed the boat on this and you and your family are already here...)

Agree with MAE. Customs are not a problem. It's the line at immigration that can test your patience to the max!! And then you're greeted with welcoming arms by the passport control person!! It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

Oh.. and if you do dress as a cat, please send us the pictures as you go through ... I'm sure it will be interesting! :)

Well if I dressed as a cat then just maybe I could crack a smile on their sour faces???!!! but I'd probably be sent to a cold cell for a few days.

I was thinking of renting a short term flat with my family then looking without hurry for a long term flat. I already tried some agencies and they just laughed at my price offer. I told them Id pay up to 2,000 dollars for a month. I looked at some and they wanted from 115 dollars and up per NIGHT!! Crazy or what!! Do they think people just got of the bannana boat??

:9456:

Some of the flats on the web looked so horrible and something that your old 90 year old grandmother would live in!! they looked stuck in a 1953 time machine!! what the hell are they thinking???? ....Oh well I keep my chin up and keep looking. I prefer to find place via friend of a friend or a contact of a contact if possible !!! Fingers crossed!!! I'v not had much if any luck on this forum apart from a few female (and attractive I may add) students contacting me in exchange for 1 months rent in their big pockets!!!! I appreciated the offers but its all a bit of a nightmare thus far.

No, you needn't do that. Just say "mew" to the customs officers and they will be searching you very carefully.
I remember there was an old Soviet animated cartoon called "Who said Mew?". Some naughty kitten said "mew" and hid. After that a dog was jumping out of his skin desperately trying to find out who said it. Ended up completely frustrated.

I have 2 cats taken from Russia 10 years ago when we were there. One we found as a kitten in the ladies changing room in Gum in Beneton and the other outside a Metro at - 26 in winter with deep snow. The trouble is when you take a pet you don't realize that you will be have it for 15 to 20 years!!!

They will be returning to their homeland!!!!!! :mooooh:

If you didn't face such prices or conditions before it doesn't mean they don't exist at all. Try to search further. But be prepared for further surprises.

It seems to me I told you already that in Moscow everything is either expensive or very expensive...:smokin:

Welcome to Moscow :punk:

But frankly, 115$/night is not that expensive for short term (that is less than 2 weeks) if the appartment is ok located. This is price of a standard hotel room in western europe and this is also the price I used to pay in Paris when I rented for short term a studio.

That 's being said, this is true that quality of econom class real estate in Moscow is way below what you would get in Western Europe. You will see for example often the word euro remont. Euro Remont = western standard parquet and appliances. But in Russia this is seen as a premium item.

In short, if you are chocked by this price, I advised you to be prepared for more :-) You wanted the Moscow experience, you will get it. Be prepared for a roller coaster ride :lovepot:

Good luck finding a (Western standard, 3 star, centrally located) hotel in Moscow for double that.

$115/night is a steal here.

Great !!!

Positive, happy and great !!! I dont doubt what you say. Moscow is a "rip off" as we say in English (a cheat) in its costs. But what can we all do? what choice do we have but to pay!? Until people learn how to price things correctly it will not change. I will barter and make the price lower and just because I'm not Russian does = I will pay more to that dream it will not be a reality with this foreigner!! If you dont like my price goodbye. I would not pay more than 30 dollars a night for some of the places they have online for rent in Moscow. Sorry to any flat owners hoping for my business in rent, you will have a long wait.

It will change in time but it has not over the last 15 years, so it may take another 20 years?? who knows? by then it will be so polluted that people will be forced out of the city as they will not be able to breath anymore. A bad outlook, lets hope I'm wrong!?

Happy days, happy times !!! :11513:

Thank you sir for your praise on my economic skills. "Supply & demand"... hmm........!? its more complicated than that. More about greed and sociology in my opinion. P.S Is the earth round? I thought if you sailed too far on the sea you would fall off the world!! .....oh geez dad!

Exactly. Supply and demand, you're not hopeless...;) And small addition as funds concentration (around 60% of money are concentrated inside Garden Ring)... but it's also supply.

Greed and sociology are driven by, but not drivers. To lower pricing you can try to become developer and build huge amount of hi-grade, middle class and economy apartments in Moscow, selling then them for copecks. But there are much cheaper, much easier and... hm-m-m... less extravagant suicide ways...

Social being defines public consciousness (read classics of Marksizm-Leninizm), not vice versa. ;)

Ok my friend not sure I follow you? Are you saying its all about profit and fast profit, rather than normaility and fairness? If yes, I should take a wake up call to reality. I'll check in the a hotel and have a large glass of Vodka to forget my rent worries.

Hello --- I have a suggestion about your searches for flats. Basically, any apartment within the first three circle highways (koltsa) surrounding Moscow are going to be SUPER expensive, while the flats located on the edge of Moscow, near the 4th ring hiway, MKAD, are going to be cheaper...
I actually have a friend, a former moscovite who lives in America, and who is thinking about renting out her 3-bedroom apartment (I believe it's on North-Western edge of the city).

I can ask her when the flat is available, how much she will charge for it, and then pass the word to you.

Are you saying its all about profit and fast profit, rather than normaility and fairness? - it's all about life as it is at certain space/time point.
The rest is only your perception and emotions (maybe even illusions). Nevertheless I wish you success in that procedure.
Consider to increase rent budget if you're self-employed. Try to squeeze more from your employers if you're hired.

PS
P.S Is the earth round? I thought if you sailed too far on the sea you would fall off the world!! .....oh geez dad! - I'm not quite sure but friends said... No, I've been to sea couple of times by ship and went back... maybe wasn't far enough...

I had a funny case when I was passing by customs in one of the airports of Moscow.
It was an internal fly, and at the very customs I realized that I did not have my passport with me. Neither Russian nor foreign. None.
I had to fly urgently, so what I did was the following: as I was a professional athlete at that time, I told the customs officer that they had to let me go, because the sport of Russia will be damaged severely if I don't. After an hour of arguments and showing some sports pictures I was let go to fly without any passport.

;) "Lucky f***!"(C) from "DieHard-3"... but this just means you'll get into so called "KGB/Lubyanka basements" a bit later, making them ten bucks income and allowing economy on transportation cost from airport to city center. :)

I agree... but the politicians must change "the will of the people" is called a democracy. Traffic will have to be improved due to climate change but that's another issue from the poll questions.
