In the last weeks or even months, the forum has been flooded with spammers. We, mods and admins have tried to keep as many of these spammers out of your sight, as well as their spam messages.

However, spammers turn to new tricks, such as making more or less fake introductions and posting often useless comments in threads. Often, their posts and profiles contain links to gambling, porn and commercial websites. Internally, we have started calling them "Zombies", users that seem to be alive at first, but in fact are only here to spam.

In order to put a stop to this, some parameters on this site have changed. This has some influence on the amount of posts you need to make before:
- posting links to websites
- send/reply to PMs
- posting ads in the Marketplace
- some other features.
In other words: as a Newbie, before you can use all features, you will have to stick around for a while and be active on the forums.

Creating a nice introduction thread and joining in on a few discussions on the forums should get you beyond the post limit in no time! Please see this thread (http://www.expat.ru/forum/information/136893-how-do-i-get-my-post-count-up-so-i-can-post-ads.html) for more details

This is a cool measure but one of the problems is - for example - I am looking at the for sale forums and have trouble now PM'ing the folks about their stuff and I hesitate to post my email address on the forums because the spammers can grift it that way. So it's a good measure but I'd appreciate it if you guys could at least lift the block off my account....

PS - I bought a nice iron, water filter and bed off the forum in the last week - so very cool...I wouldn't really trust other places, but here it definitely feels more reliable...

since we haven't (yet) seen any real abuse of the PM system by spammers, we have now reduced the requirement for sending them to one post - so if you want to send PMs and haven't posted yet we invite you to at least drop by the introductions forum and say hi :sunny:

I understand that you had to take measures to resolve the spam problems. Unfortunately I had used this forum to pm to several people who prefer not to post. It is shame that it had to roll-over into the pm function. Most of them are no longer available :thumbdwn: Hopefully they will come back and see that the rule has changed to a single post. Although I guess I could just send them a pm and tell them.

Please note that going forward you will need at least 5 posts to your credit in order to post ads in the Marketplace area

we have had a few , you mods have gotten many.... have taken quick action when us members have alerted you to them,,,,

I usually call their "bluff" if they were active members and truely know their products they would respond to my questions ,,,,,, the mobile phone/communicator spammer comes to mind ....

as with emails use good sense , if it seems too good of a deal , its a spammer/scammer

You wouldn't believe the amount of spam that still has to be manually wiped off the boards, it's pretty bad... although the new measures, plus some other enhancements are making it easier :)

Do you have any suggestions? I can't see anything wrong with the directions here that may well encourage those who want to be part in the community. In fact I find these rules most encouraging for those who want to be part of this community.

If you do foresee any problems in the rule, please discuss as all are willing to learn and take heed.

How can expat.ru make it more comfortable for those who want to be members? Believe me criticism is of great value on this subject. Yes expat.ru wants as many members to join as a genuine community as possible.

Do you have any suggestions that might help here?

Are newbies clear in the fact that they can make post and new threads from day one. I do wonder if some of them are very confused. Questions such as when can I post/ When that's exactly what they have just done. How do I make a new thread? You have just done it by introducing yourself. You can contribute in any way you wish by answering threads with your posts. And you can also make your own threads and we will respond to you. That's what a forum is all about. Having a human community discussing matters of being an expat or being an English speaking Russian mixing with the Expat community. And no! unlike other expat forums we are gentle and polite with those English speaking Russians who are not virtually bi-ligual

So what's the newbies problem, as the only section you are limited to for a very short period of time is the advertising section. Just enjoy being part of an xcellent forum and fantastic community.

Unless they've never used a forum in their life previously I'd say it's pretty straightforwards... five meaningful posts in the discussions area, and then they'll get the keys to free advertising in the Marketplace :)

What's so fantastic about this market place. I love an argument, don't you :)

The market place and advertising place is one. But there are other places in this forum where you can make your promotions. And to me much better, if you are not afraid of comments from other posters

I must admit that I haven't been reporting spam here for some time, therefore something is working.

But I can't see from the other side. Hopefully the security is not so tight that it puts some genuine members off. A sort of British bulldog style is not always recommeded :)

Spamming in general terms is bad, but what exactly do you mean by spamming at this forum?

Tougher measures have been made in expat.ru to prevent spammers and those who simply have the intent of impersonal advertising with no intention of being a member of this forum, of which of course we want active members.

So in return I ask all members to warmly welcome new genuine members as from now. Why? Because they now take a lot of trouble to join now I guess, and well be exhausted when they are finally members. Yes I think they have had a more tougher time than us oldie members. So be nice to them and gongratulute them in their effort in becoming genuine members. And keep chatting to them and prove to them that this site could be addictive to them. encourage them.

However if you find a problem with a new poster. such as the posts have only one intent as having their own personal greed in selling a service, and most certainly if this message is the same in many posts, then report it by preesing the button top right hand corner of the that particular post. Only then will we cut out the bad guys on this forum. But at the same time encourage the majority of very good members who join this site.

If we can only be vigalent and welcoming and encouraging to genuine new forum members applying here, only then will we have the best forum site in the world. We are almost there.

Good information! My wife and I will be in Moscow for two years. We have become very good Russian consumer. When we go back to the states, I know where to post items. Thanks again,
