How does Google make money?

I'm just curious, because they officially went public on the NY Stock Exchange today. I fail to see how a search engine website can substantiate 23 billion dollars in shares (to date).

Any financial geniuses care to explain for me?

everytime you search for something they invade your PC in the background, retrieve your internet history, your outlook e-mail address, your cookies and m&ms, they sale everything to the male attribute enhancing experts that come every day into your mail box with that tempting offer...

other than that, nobody really knows... but check your pocket, i'm sure you're missing some bucks... ;)

sorry, i ain't no financial genius

I think it's slightly more than just adevrtising. They sell research to big research development companies, provide internet solutions etc, probably making money out of anything and everything on the Internet. Plus low overheads.

as for the 23bn IPO, remember that the market cap is made up from the money provided by the share-buying public (the whole purpose of lisiting) and underwriting banks. It is not money made in the business, it's effectively money out of thin air.

I have subscribed to the hotmail paid account and get 2GB of storage and can send 56 MB attachments

For that I hardly get any rubbish, as their spam protection is quite good.
