Has there even been one day about 25? I just looked at the 10 day forecast for the next...er...10 days. Nothing but rain and clouds. I'm beginning to think the only thing worse than a Moscow summer is a Moscow winter.

PATHETIC

As of last summer this city has officially been renamed as London.

Ghost, if you think this is bad - and it is - wait until the next round of peat bog fires (last time was two years ago).

Now that is truly disgusting - smog hanging over the city, can't breathe, hair, clothes and apartments stink of smoke - and then add the normal Moscow summer dust....

You see, things could be worse :)

Mmmm, rainy days have their charm. Id stay at home in the warm bed with good music on and a glass of hot wine. And who cares that it is just a middle of the day. By the evening my eyes would shine brighter than the most summer sun.

Ccheer up, guys, we here have two winters: one with the green grass and the other one with snow.

Peat is actually a layer of tree bark and other dead plant material that has accumulated over many years and is covered by a somewhat thin layer of topsoil. When the bark gets wet (as it does in bogs/swamps), like any semi-dry plant material it composts and gives off heat. When the sun shines directly overhead of a peat-filled area, the heat can build up to a point that the peat self-ignites and smolders, and it is nearly impossible to extinguish it, hence last year's summer peat fires which covered all of Moscow in smog for several weeks.

The same thing happens with hay. If the grass isn't allowed to dry completely and is baled with even a small wet patch on the inside, it will almost definitely self-combust in the barn.

Ghost,

Did you miss the three days of summer we had?

I understand what peat moss is - just wasn't aware of the burning of it. This article you (Surok) posted was interesting, but it must be from a past year. This quote tipped me off:

This year, however, the number of fires has increased because of the long period of hot weather in the area. There also has been little rain or wind.

Uh, not this summer. So peat bog fires probably won't be happening anytime THIS year.

Better this way than sitting by the computer all day and wishing you were outside. Anyway, I am off to Nice end of this week, will bring some sun back for you people.

yeah, it's certainly not likely this year - gets really bad in Moscow about once every 20 years

you may be lucky, and get a decent summer next year or the year after - people say that the summers are always bad for two or three years after the peat bog fires - we're in our second year now :)

Radio Monte Carlo must have played "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" a thousand times today. Or was it only one and I couldn't get it out of my head.
