Good day to Everyone. I live in Nizhny Novgorod, large city about 400 km from Moscow. Is there anybody who's interested in discussion about some NN topics?
As far as I know, there's no expat community in NN, but this forum could be good opportunity to initialise it. Everybody is welcome!

Why don't you post pictures of NN?

Hey all,
actually I am moving to NN in couple of months. Lived in US for very long time. But now my wife wants to come back.
I am actually looking for work in NN, but found it quite hard to find.
I am a Project Manager at IT company. Speak English and Russian fluently and have American education.

Would be great if someone has any suggestions!
But chatting about NN is cool anyways.

Thanks.

Anton, I would like to help you in job search the way I can. Please right down what you already know about local job market as the IT sphere is concerned. I worked for a company that was preparing developers 3 years ago (http://htbs.nnov.ru/), so may be I would give you some helpful information.

I'll be in there September in a couple of weeks. Anything I need to see there?

nazza

Hands, if you mean to say - what is worth sightseeing, I would advise you to walk in the Kremlin (Кремль). Other good places to walk are - Verchne-Volzskaya Naberezhnaya (Верхне-Волжская набережная), Nizhne-Volzhskaya Naberezhnaya (Нижне-Волжская набережная), Naberezhnaya Pheodorovskogo (Набережная Феодоровского), Yarmarka (Ярмарка, ярмарочный комплекс). If you will have possibility to get to travel more, you can visit Gorodets, Makaryevo Nunnery (Макарьевский монастырь), Diveevo Nunnery (Дивеевский монастырь), Bolshoe Boldino (Большое Болдино). If you have more specific interests such as sports, write back to me and may be I'll manage to help you.

Hi,
do not know much about local companies in NN. Do know there are more of them these days but nothing specific.
Would like to use American education, Project Management experience and English as primary points in search of a job.

As job for software developers is concerned, look at these three, the most large companies:
. MERA Networks, Inc. (http://www.meranetworks.ru/)
"": . (http://www.telma.ru/rus/index.php)
And there is research centre of Intel http://www.intel.com/

Anton, I posted previous message and then suddenly have found local site of Intel:
| ITLab (http://www.itlab.unn.ru/?dir=117)

I went by car and my trip Moscow-NN-Diveevo Moscow was about 1100 km !!! Road was not bad, I dont want to describe it, cause you know about Russian roads !
So Moscow- Nizhny Novgorod takes us about 5 hours. Only 1 time (thank God) we were stopped (near Vladimir city) by policeman,:redcard: and now we must pay for high speed. He was so kind and our payment is about only 300 rub. Its min tax.
I lived at Minina str. (its the center of NN, near the Kremlin).
It was a little time there, but I love NN all my heart Oka and Volga river, Kremlin, Boat Station, Verhnevolzhskaya Embankment, Pokrovskaya str (look like Arbat in Moscow) its the small parts of NN I can see.:watching::inlove:
Oh, guys, info for you, in NN so many pretty women !! And its true!!! Hm. I think much more than in Moscow!!!:gorgeous:
Well, I talk with some men from NN, they asked me where Iam from, we discussed a big Moscow prices and of course weather.
Diveevo is a saint place not far from NN (about 170 km). I lived near the Monastery at the Hotel "Diveevo Sloboda" It has a 3* status, lovely wood-houses for tourists with good territory, but not cheap.
Road Diveevo Moscow is about 430 km.
Well Iam back, with all my memories, with 575 pictures!!!!:inlove::11109:

for nazza - Roma, thank you for your pictures, and your Internet page about NN !:applause:
for Pete - my pics exceeds the forum's limit :eh:
for MELODY- Dear, Iam sure you need to go there !!!! Beautiful place!;)

I have worked and lived in NN for almost three years in 2004-2006, as a coordinator of the donor-funded consulting project. Our office was very close to Bolshaya Pokrovka. The locals call it 'Gorkovski Arbat' humorously featuring famous Moscow's Arbat pedestrian street and Gorky, the old Soviet name of Nizhny Novgorod.

I moved to NN from Moscow with my family. We found a nice big apartment at Zvezdinka Street. My wife got a job in the local office of AIG, insurance company, and my son went to kindergarten. Though our car radio was twice stolen, and car window broken to pieces, we had a great time there, really unforgettable.

After the project finished, we returned to Moscow. Apart from sweet memories, I've saved enought to pay for my MBA which I am doing now part-time in England.

how much would you say it costs more or less to stay at these places? are these 3star, 5star, budget hotels, etc.?
and what does a ticket cost round trip (return) for train or plane?

Hotels 100-200 USD a night (3-4 star), train tickets 1200 r.(one way), plane 2000-3000 one way..
Visiting their Kremlin - for free! (no tickets needed)

Nice city! Views of Volga - free as well.

Hey, since you lived in NN for 3 years, anyway you can connect me with someone who can help me find a job. I am not looking for just technical jobs, I rather looking for management jobs that need English speaking (may be American educated) or something close. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I visit NN about 4 times a year. Lately, I've been staying here since it is very close to the office:

(http://www.oktyabrskaya.ru/) - safe, predictable, decent breakfast, nice employees

This time I'm trying, as it is even closer to the office:

I've also stayed here, but their wireless set up was a nuisance:

" ". -. , , . . (http://www.nikola-house.ru/index.html)

And this one is nice, too:

Woohoo... I get to take my first Russian train ride in a sleeping cabine (gopnik style cabin, I think) to NN this w/e... :-)

Bring a bottle of wodka, pack out my best Russian (erm... which Russian?) and see where this ride will take me.

I might share some details when I'm back... (depending on whether it doesn't fall foul of site rules) :11581:

I've taken the train to Moscow from NN a few times, and the sleeper cabin is not bad! The overnight is a very relaxing way to get there, and there's an "express" that only takes 5 hours I think.

Anyhow, it all depends on who your roommate is! :p

I'll be arriving in NN this weekend, as well.

I lived in NN 6 years before occasionly came and stayed in Moscow. NN is just cool place. Moscow is a capital and bla-bla-bla but its nothing like NN. Now i m too much stuck here with work and study but there is no day in my life now when i dont want to just give everything up here and go back to my dearest NN. I miss so much old historical streets and buildings, FRIENDLY people, tasty cafes and romantic atmosphere. It is just cosy there. May be one day i`ll do that.
Just a little advise for people who are looking for a job there - you must know russian language because unlike Moscow there are not many foreign companies. (I dont know any)

Jien
24-10-2008, 11:13
Yes, you are right, but true is that when i ve arrived I was able to communicate with locals. My friend ist totally lost here she is not able to talk in russian, unfortunatelly she doesnt do anything about it. Out off Moscow is not easy.
I am starting to like it here, I have luck to have good russian people around me.
So, give me some advise, what was you favourite cafe or restaurants? For the moment I like Biblioteca on Pokrovka and for meal British Embassy.
And what about fitness centre?

Julianna
24-10-2008, 12:11
Good fitness in Pushkin park - worldclass; also Reebok in "Chocolate" Shopping center. I loved British pub also. Very good chinesse just next door from British pub, very nice designed "Ermicofe" on Porkrovka near the train way. Go and visit cafes inside Kremlin walls, you may as well walk inside the walls and enjoy spectacular view on a river and low part of city from there. Tubeteika, Papasha Billy, Pirushka u Gansa, so many many places. Just wander around the town and walk in the doors which says restaurant!
I have noticed something about places in NN - when you look at it from the street its just nothing special might be just gray door, But when you get in - it can be amazing place, thats what usually happens:)

Sleeper car isn't gopnik... how disappointing! I was fully expecting and hoping to make some new friends in a train-wodka delirium :-)

Anwyays... I was a bit excited and premature (typically male huh...?) ... going there NEXT weekend, maybe see you around town if you're still there (I'll be the one with a train-wodka delirium).

Glad to be finding some useful information here :-)

Jien, I find in NN one pretty French Bistro called "Gavrosh":applause: Very cosy place !!!
Rozhdestvenskaya str., 23
you can check
:: (http://www.pir.nnov.ru/gavrosh/)
(I find only in Russian)

Julianna
26-10-2008, 07:30
This place is probably new i never heard about it before:) And if starting talk about Rozhdestvenka street - is "Bezukhov" still there? Very interesting old-aristocratic-styled restaurant:)

Jien
26-10-2008, 10:00
I was there, you are right Gavros is good, but you see as a newcomer in this place i find difficoult to pay for french standard double price. But apart that, i like it, it reminds me moments I ve spent in France.
I will also check the other place in the street.
What makes me worry is that I still have nothing booked for next 3 days off. Deevevo Sloboda (resort next monastery) is full and I dont want to stay stuck here, I will try to go to travel agency on Monday.

well, Julianna, I don't know, cause I was in NN only 2 days.
At Rozhdestvenskaya street (near Gavrosh) is Pyatkin rest. Looks great, but I think expensive.
Ресторация Пяткинъ check !:beerbros:

As I understand all these Rests were included in PIR-group, one owner I think.

Jien, yes, a little bit expensive there (but we live in Moscow, and ready to see that prices).:rules: But I like all these Frinch things !!!
Ok, try another one, and you'll tell about rests in NN.:sunny:
Unfortunately "Deevevo Sloboda" is not cheap too. For example (2 rooms in house costs 5.000 rub a day, and only breakfast).....

Piatkin is also OK, I was in Uzbec resto, not far, meal so, so, but decoration and dancers, not bad.
Concerning prices, I meant, that I am not prepared to pay something what is for me standard (Gavros), but I am ready to pay for exotic stuff. At the moment it is Deevevo sloboda.
As I am often in France, for me Gavros is standard, as newcomer I am not get used to pay for standard - double price.
But I learn fast :-)
... mais cest la vie.
Do you know that at the moment of Armagedon, it will be good idea to be at Deevevo? you never know

Yes, Bezuhkov is still there!

I work late hours when I'm in NN, so I know mostly the good late night or all-night restaurants.

Tako (sushi) and a new place, Caramel, are both pretty good, too. British Embassy has some of the most good and reliable food for Westerners to eat!

Unfortunately, I had to postpone my trip to December or January, so I'll update again with thoughts on hotels after that.

Cheers!

About children aged 2-6 yrs old, there are two possibility, one is attending "CREF" which is franco-english-russian speaking kindergarten and the other is go to russian facility called Bembi, they try to teach children other languages.
After that age, there are only russian schools specialised on languages. IN reality, children go to school they sit there and after they try to follow study programs from their school in Moscow or somewhere else. This situation is not funny, but it is better than get separated from family. You can always study on-line and make exams in Moscow. They plan to built school teaching in other languages (english) but is not yet prepared
Concerning free time, during week there is no need couse you start late and finish late, but weekends are OK.
Community does not exists, for these reasons, children are mostly aged up to 6 yrs.
Winter is long here, so they try to offer thing for babies, as they say this is not Europe.

There were some questiones about finding a job that would require knowledge of English. As an indignant and marketologist who is continuosly looking for applying of my skill, I must admit that it isn't easy here. Much harder than in Moscow or SPb. I don't mean occasional uses of language - I have it regularly. But if you intend to speak or write English every day and much and you are not a translator - your chances are small.
Not trying to disappoint anyone. Try Kelly Services. It's got new office in NN and still keeps to high standards. I applied there and had no luck, but this is a good opportunity.

Hi there!

To continue the topic devoted to NN that another way to find friends here (especially English-speaking ones;) is to visit the site CouchSurfing - Participate in Creating a Better World, One Couch At A Time (http://couchsurfing.com). We post some information about different gatherings and 'Polyglot' meetings (meetings where we speak foreign languages) in the group of Nizhny Novgorod. Besides I can suggest your own eeting or contact any of people from Nizhny.

Enjoy!:farout:

Which pubs do you normally drink at? :11158:

I tend to spend my time at the English Consulate pub which has a good location, OK choice of drinks, helpful coatman and good service. Saying that, the prices are quite expensive when compared to back in UK.

The Tractorist Bar on the main street is pretty good too, although with its many rooms - it tends to be too quiet for my liking :)

When in comparison the Irish pub next to Minin Ploshad is comfy place for that drink or two, but wouldn't stay for longer than 30minutes as the confined rooms doesn't disperse smoke very well and gets too hazy during busy hours.

I like English pub too. The food is very good and the restaurant has its own style.

The "Tinkoff" is not bad too. It's located on the upper floor of the shopping mall "Floors" and its modern hall with glass walls is equiped with many TV sets showing sport programs.

My friends strongly recommend the "Bezuchov", but I wasn't there yet.

For the late night chat, especially over the weekends, the "Bizon" is the option. It is famous for its lively (and noisy) w/end disco shows (mixture of styles including retro) which attracts many expats, like me...:happymad:

Intel has their office and labs in NN, see addresses here:
Intel Offices in Russia (http://www.intel.com/intel/location/russia.htm) - you can call Moscow numbers to get switched to NN board.

They do microcode developing for Xeons, Itaniums and some low-level things for WiFi/WiMax drivers here. If you know asm, maybe you can try ;)

If not - at least you'll be surrounded with nice NN girlzzzzz ;)
