Andrey Rublev’s Central Museum of Old Russian Culture and Art is situated in Spaso-Andronnikovsky Monastery. At the beginning of the 15th century a prominent Russian icon-painter Andrey Rublev lived and worked here. According to historical evidence his last work was “fascinating pictures” which decorated the stone church of Andronnikovsky Monastery. The centre of the architectural ensemble of the monastery is a white-stone Saviour cathedral, the oldest church building in Moscow (first third of the 15th century), once painted by Andrey Rublev. Unfortunately Rublev’s frescoes have not survived and the only thing left is some ornamental fragments in the altar window openings.
