Nikolay Roerich was a remarkable personality – not only a traveller, an archeologist, an artist and a philosopher, - he was a man of strong spirit, who could lead people to realization of his ideas.

In 1921, having come to New York, he founded the Master Institute of United Arts. Later, after several expeditions through India and Central Asia, Nikolay and Helena Roerichs founded the Agni Yoga Society in New York, which promoted an idea of Living Ethics, including and synthesizing philosophical and religious teachings of all countries and ages. For some years the family lived in Kullu Valley, India. Here the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute was established, which studied the results of their expeditions. The Institute's activities included botanical and ethnological-linguistic studies, and the exploration of archeological sites.

Their another act of historical importance was The Roerich Pact – an international Treaty signed in 1929 for protection of cultural treasures during times of both war and peace. This Treaty is still in force.
