The building itself is a marvellous piece of classicism in Moscow architecture; it was erected after a project of the famous Italian architect Domenico Gilardi. The museum houses one of country’s finest collections of art of the oriental world. Exquisite artefacts are on display representing the history of Iranian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan art as well as art of Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia and Buryatia. You can find Iranian daggers with filigree engraving; Persian miniature paintings in watercolor with gold; Indian statues of Buddah from the 3rd century; Chinese nephrite sculptures and paintings on silk from the 15th century; fantastic ornaments and altar objects from Buratia; rare collection of Japanese “netske” and samples of Japanese calligraphy; Indonesian magical dolls of wood and ox skin used in the traditional theatre on the Java Island.

Traditional art of nations from Northern Russia deserves special attention because of the unique technique of Escimo miniature sculptures carved out of walrus tusk. This tradition is well preserved. There is also an exposition of works by famous artists; among them are such outstanding masters as Georgian famous primitivist Niko Pirosmani and Martiros Sarjan, the pride of Armenia.
