Cathedral of the Intercession
From Moscowiki
The formidable Cathedral of Intercession stands on the Silver Island in the middle of Izmailovsky Park. Built in 1670s and consecrated in 1679, it replaced the wooden church, which was erected in honour of the victory over the Poles in 1612. This typical for Russian architecture cross-domical cathedral impresses with its size: its total height is 57 metres and the central column is 18-metre high; five black domes emphasize the grandeur of the cathedral.
From the outside the walls of the Cathedral of Intercession are decorated with more than 7000 fantastic ceramic tiles; here the author, excellent colourist of the 17th century Stepan Polubes, introduced a very unusual motif – so-called "peacock-eye". Unfortunately, the cathedral’s treasure, unique five-tier iconostasis, is not preserved, only ten damaged icons escaped destruction in Soviet times. In 1990 after many years of desolation, the Cathedral of the Intercession was returned to the Church and sounds of motets can be heard again in this majestic temple.
