    do NOT celebrate 40th birthday?

please note, i would appreciate it, no funny answers or remarks, because i feel rather strong about the answer i got. from several people who's judgement and answers i trust...
in russia apparently you should NOT celebrate your 40th birthday with people that are NOT your closest familie. only the 40th and no other one.
you can celebrate at home, in a restaurant this is fine, but just do not invite friends, collegues or aquaintances. or fi they should arrive unexpectedly, you will politely tell them that they will not invited ( if there is a birthday celebration going on) and they should not be upset or take it personally.
as many of us know who are longer in russia ( and people of orthodox faith of course) that 40 days after a person dies, the soul goes to heaven.
and this date, 40 days is apparently also associated with the 40th birthday. it sounded rather confusing to me but people asked me several times not to celebrate the 40th birthday with 'strange' people.
( it is by the way not my birthday and i am catholic, so i ownder if/how that would have affected me some many years back.....)

Benedikt, yes, what you wrote about the Russian tradition is correct,.Will someone celebrate his/her BD in Russia? If so, his/her colleagues etc. will understand why they were not invited. If this person is Catholic, he should celebrate it in the usual way, that is, the way he would do it at home.

Benedict, don't take it to close to heart. It all is a superstition and not more...

Very interesting. I wonder if it also has something to do with the 40 days Christ spent in the desert. Hmm.
