this happened at a very short notice.
be careful when buying tickets from scalpers. they might flog you something you might not be aware of. and you stand before closed doors. ...

the real reasons why it was changed. Radio Business FM said the - Dance of the Transvestites - does not fit with the image.
It was only the 3rd time in the history of the Bolshoi that a performance was cancelled before the premier. Once it was at the request(?) of Madam Furzeva . of - there is no sex in the Soviet Union - fame....

Various rumours going around. I read in the New York Times today that the production may not have been ready, although I find that hard to believe given that Serebrennikov has worked successfully with the Bolshoi before. TASS reported yesterday that culture minister Medinsky intervened, but that claim is now denied by the Ministry.

It wasn't Furtseva who claimed that "there is no sex in the Soviet Union", by the way, but a woman on a TV show in 1986.

Also, in terms of tickets, the Bolshoi is apparently honouring tickets sold for "Nureyev" and will stage "Don Quixote" instead. Which isn't too cool if you paid Bolshoi prices to see the premiere of a new ballet, but at least it's something.

I read that some important person did view the pre-premiere and was unhappy that the performance was about a homosexual person and that this main charter die from HIV, so not that PC = cancel.

That may well be that case. You'd think they would have worked that out before commissioning the show, given that it's public knowledge that Nureyev was gay and died of an AIDS-related illness.

-State-run news agency TASS on Monday cited a source close to the Culture Ministry as saying that Minister Vladimir Medinsky had personally issued the order to postpone the ballet because it was seen to be in violation of the country’s laws against spreading “propaganda for non-traditional sexual relations” to minors.-
